What is happening to gaming?

I am going to start of this blog with a question

When was the last time you played a great Split-Screen Game?

Now fristly I will state I am not saying there a no good split-screen capable games out there and I'm not saying that online multiplayer is not fun but something needs to change. I remember a time when console gamers didn't have the option of playing online ( Yes , it was like that at one point ) and so had to enjoy what we had. Now some people may ask "How did you have fun"... well firstly we actually played the campaign/story mode but that's a blog for another time, secondly we played with our friends on the same screen, invite someone round and had a blast .That's right, it's unbelievable to think you could play with someone in the same room as you isn't it .

The reason for this blog is that the majority I spend on consoles is when im at my friends house, so seeing as I have my fair share of games I thought I have a look at what I could take round for us to play and unbelievably I found barely any games that had spli-screen and even less that were actually worth playing on its respective split-screen mode. After we got bored of playing Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Borderlands I thought maybe it was just my collection that lacked fun 2-player games and so took a trip to my local game shops.

Most dissapointing shopping trip in a long while. 90% of games ( Excluding Sport Games ) these days are single player with online multiplayer only. Racing games that are single player, 9/10 of the racing games I picked up were single player. How can racing games be single player? That was part of the fun of a racing game playing with a friend. I'm sure these game developers are forgetting about us people who actually like spending time with other humans , and not through headsets ect.

Walking away with NBA,NFL and Tony Hawk ( All sporting games may I add ) I again thought this can't be the case and I must just be missing all the good slit-screen games so took to google, many forums popped up with threads looking for good split screen games so after reading through lots of replies it's not just me who has noticed, there's barely anything out there.

We need to do something about this, game developers are spending so much time on online play when they shouldn't forget us gamers who like playing offline with friends, now before people start attacking this thread aying "Times are changing blah blah blah ..." Yes they may be changing but not everyone gamer likes playing alone with a headset and whatever else talking to friends over the net, I like actually seeing my freinds, having a joke and maybe even some funny friendly fire on games that allow it.

I hope to god developers are not so money focused that they are stopping split-screen due to people not having to have an individual copy. Yes I understand game development companies are businesses and buisinesses are there to make as much money as possible but they should care enough about the product to give consumers what they want. We want to be able to play with friends online and offline

tl;dr
Nothing is split-screen anymore and everything is played online

You'd be surprised at how many of us remember split-screen games.

But I agree, there aren't very many anymore.

I've never played a good split screen game, since I didn't think one ever existed in the first place.
I could never stand splitscreen and my prowess ingame dropped remarkably when I did play it.

I greatly prefer online or lan multiplayer (or single screen like Smash Bros and shit).

Man, you got a point there buddy, I remeber when I was younger and my Bro and Sis would always play MK: DD over my GCN or when my Bro was teaching me how to play Mario World (not split screen but you get the point) now everyones all hermitish and want every damn thing to hve online. Its as if nobody goes out and makes friends anymore. Its really sad.

There's a reason for that. People have become self-only orientated and sadistic. "Friends" really just hit each other and mess with each other. (As far as I know going by 2011/2012 reports) People don't want to deal with physical issues anymore.
+1 to online only.

Well, only games I play with my friends are fighting games and racing games, racing games always have split screens from what I recall and fighters well, the screen splits when the chars are too far apart (like in dragonball games).

The world is changing at a fast pace, and most of us are forced to change with it, ironically...

this morning before school me and my bro went for a round of mario kart Wii :)

Wii still has quite a few splitscreen or atleast multiplayer OFFLINE games :D

Goldeneye 64? Screening others to see where they are and shooting them with the golden gun while spawn camping the ammo. Gold I say ;)

I say that most devs rely on online multiplayer. The single player mode is usually neglected and really anemic. It's kind of sad, but I actually appreciate split screen mode or actual multiplayer in the same room.

Can you imagine if Nintendo remade Goldeneye 64 on the 3DS?

Borderlands 2 is purported to be split-screen capable. That said, I would never play it in that way. I hate split-screens. Give me a LAN or give me death.

I tell you, some of the best game experiences I've had was with split-screen multiplayer games. My bros and I become goofs when we play multiplayer in that fashion (like with MKWii, or even back in the old days of multiplayer).

I don't play many splitscreen games but I play plenty of local multiplayer games.

Generally when I'm with friends we play a fighting game like Soul Calibur or MvC3. I can't remember us ever playing Halo or anything else locally.

And they already have the best splitscreen game ever (Perfect Dark) on XBLA and it's fucking awesome. Better than the original in every way. It even has FUCKING ONLINE SPLITSCREEN SO YOU CAN SCREENLOOK LIKE A FUCKING BOSS.

But yeah, fighting games are usually my go-to local multiplayer game. When it comes to something that splits a screen it usually ends up sucking since almost none of us have big TVs and you end up squinting to see anything.
