Oh, I see. So this includes sales since last April.

Okay, that's fine then.
Yeah, it would be pretty remarkable if they set themselves a goal of selling 10 million units in 20 weeks, but I can see how you could make that mistake now that I read the news post again. I'll edit that to make it more clear.

Sucks for Sony but that's part of business, sometimes you do well, and sometimes you do less then well. The'll be fine in the end as will Nintendo and Microsoft, they all have way too much money to go under.

To elaborate, the PS3 is the reason the gaming division hasn't been profitable for quite some time. The Vita while arguable if it made back the costs to develop it sells for a slight profit.
trying what ? if a company is not doing good the best thing is to cut divisions lay off some people for what i hear they already finally stop producing PS2
The Ps2 sold decently for quite a while so why stop producing it. It is probably profitable.

Except the gaming division is one of the devisions that has Operating Income rather than Operating Loss. Losses are attributed to the Mobile Phone and Home Entertainment and Sound.

Please read the documentation before making wild claims.

Playstation
FY 2006 $69,000,000
FY 2007 -$1,971,000,000
FY 2008 -$1,080,000,000
FY 2009 -$664,000,000
FY 2010 $429,000,000
FY 2011 $435,000,000
Q1 2012 -$45.000,000
They said the PSP proved profitable after one year. So the Game division losses are mostly likely caused by the PS3.

They said the PSP proved profitable after one year. So the Game division losses are from the PS3. As of Q1 2010 Sony's game division merged with another division but even then it is quite likely the PS3 is still in the red. I might be wrong since the Q2 2010 - Q3 2012 might of changed things but I did my research.
1. There are no losses in the Gaming division this quarter - it posted a profit.
2. It's a smaller profit when compared to last year due to sales decreased by 15,8%.

Read the documentation, from Q2.

Alright point taken (I shouldn't have said quite some time since some would argue about what some time is) but what I'm trying to point out is overall the PS3 has caused losses for the gaming division. Even with the profit of 2010, 2011, and Q2 2012 the PS3 is still in the red.

Actually when I think about it Sony did claim the marketing they did during the launch of the Vita for the Vita costed them 50 million or 500 million. I guess if those expenses are part of the gaming division the PS3 is probably highly profitable as of late.

Wait what?
Is this true?

The PS3 used to be a big money loser, yes, but aprox. half-way through its life-cycle the situation turned upside-down and it started being the bread winner of the Gaming division, and it remains to do so as far as I know. The sales of the system are slowing down in anticipation of Sony's to-be-announced next generation system, but they will not kill the hen that brings them golden eggs before they're really close to releasing its successor, or at least that'd be the sensible decision in their case.

They've just released the Super Slim - they have all intentions to sell it and will work towards this goal.

R&D, advertising and distribution does not come cheap, and until a console starts earning money, it's considered a loss.

Where I live, they had a gigantic ad all along the side of best buy.
Shame that was probably wasted money so far.
Honestly? It really depends.

For example, Poland has always been a Sony-strong country. Nintendo properly entered the market with the N64, which at the time seemed less interesting than the PlayStation - it was more expensive and it had a limited amount of more expensive games. While the Game Boy Colour (I don't think the big one or the Pocket were available in stores - they were mostly shipped from abroad by the wealthier people or by those who had family abroad, similarily to other systems before the 32-bit era) was quite strong sales-wise due to a complete lack of opposition (the popularity of Famiclones and the Pokemon Anime also played a huge role), this is no longer the case with the DS and subsequent systems. This is practically Sony Land.

According to Maciej Kmiołek, Marketing Director of SCE Poland, the PSVita sold more units in the first two days since its launch than the 3DS throughout 2011, and judging from what I can observe myself, I am willing to believe that.

The 3DS literally *isn't* marketed at all as of now - I've only seen one commercial of it concerning Zelda OoT 3D, but that was ages ago. Not a single billboard, nothing. The Vita on the other hand is all around the place, mostly on huge billboards, not to mention the Vita launches that were held here - can't say I remember a 3DS launch at all.

I don't see what's so funny about this statement.

As of March 27, 2012 aprox. 1000 Polish users used the eShop - the survey title used was the demo of Metal Gear Solid 3D. It's safe to assume that there were anything between 1000 and 2000 3DS users based in Poland at that time - more accurate figures are not available. In the meantime, the Vita sold 4000 units within the first month and continued to sell at a rate of aprox. 1000 units weekly. Problem?

...unless you really believe that "people just didn't use the eShop".

I also don't condone you comparing me to Borat - I'm guessing that was supposed to be an insult... I think you should have a look at how Poland actually looks like.

52,000 for the year that must be a lot.... It sounds like a lot... Didn't the PS2 and the DS both sell about 150 million units? So I take it Poland is one of the larger markets.... Let's see divide 52K into 150 million hmmm so out of say a 10 year life span of those two consoles Poland counts for something like .25% of the total market.... Talk about a small sample.

My joking point was that while the Vita may be whipping ass in Poland, thats hardly the norm for the rest of the planet. (Rather the sales numbers seem to indicate the extreme opposite.) The point being just because you know "a lot of people" who buy or are into something doesn't mean the entire world swings that way.

Not that I care if the Vita sells or doesn't sell, either way is fine with me.
