I've bought a 2nd hand S3 phone and want to put SlimKat on it. I've Rooted it, installed CWM Recovery and am now getting the Status 7 error. This is the download I'm using.

Slim-i9300-4.4.2.build.5-OFFICIAL-4081

I've Googled and tried another SlimKat download and it didn't work either. That one gave me Status 0 error.

There is NO Android version on the phone atm, if I boot it it's straight to CWM Recovery, where I can wipe everything and install things from the SD card.

Any help would be appreciated!

did you try installing cyanogenmod or omnirom just to see if either of those would boot?
you could also try odin/download mode

I've succesfully installed cm-10.2.0-i9300.zip just now, so that's working. Just need to figure out how to install the Google Apps portion, haven't found them just yet. I tried installing NeatRom, but that gave me Status 7 error.

I'm not hesitant toward CyanoGenMod, my previous phone had it, I honestly don't know if SlimKat is any better. The things I mainly seek in a custom ROM are excellent battery life, as less bloatware possible, ability to run pirated apps.
Especially the bloatware part, I just can't stand not being able to remove any apps I don't like.

How would Odin/Download mode work? I connect the phone, press the AP button and select the SlimKat.zip ?

Thanks

Google Apps packages, just choose the one you want and then install it through your recovery.

As for custom Roms, you could always go with Paranoid Android.

Update your recovery which is your problem. You have the international S3 I think. Which I have. Go to XDA and get the philz touch.

First, as mentioned, update your recovery to the latest version (personally, I prefer TWRP over CWM). Status 0 means you have a wrong script in the ROM's META-INF. Status 7 basically mean your recovery is too outdated to flash a Kitkat ROM.

Make sure the phone you have is indeed the international version, you can check the model number from underneath the battery.

Slimkat is pretty meh, I've had more battery drain on that ROM than others when I had my S3. Paranoid Android/CM are probably the better ROMs, they're pretty barebones for the most part so it should work fine for what you want. Also, as long as you're rooted, bloatware will never be a problem since you can just straight up uninstall any package (within reason) system or otherwise, and because Android natively supports side-loading there's 0 special requirements for installing pirated apps, any ROM (including stock) supports side-loading.

I ended up installing CM, working with that now. My previous phone had CM too and pleased with it, so I'll settle for that.
Thanks for the Status 7 error, but I just want to enjoy this phone now, done with messing around for now.
Already have everything in place (messages/contacts), just have to find some cracked apps (Titanium Backup Pro for example) and I can really start freezing bloatware.

Thanks for the help, if I have any other questions I'll post in this topic, no need to make more topics. Thanks!!!

A year later, and looking to again upgrade my custom ROM. Mainly want to see what the 5.0 fuzz is all about.

As always, the things I want the most are excellent battery life, as less bloatware possible, ability to run pirated apps. I'm not really into top performance in games or emulators, just want a stable and easy on the eyes ROM.

I've searched a bit and came across these;
Have no idea which ones the best for me, leaning towards crDroid but anything is still on the table. From my very limited knowledge, there's not that much difference between all custom ROMs.

Completely different phone user here (LG Optimus 4X HD), but you should try BlissPop. There was a version of that made for my phone and it was great when I had it. Battery was good and didnt really come with bloatware. If by bloatware you mean all the google apps that come with, thats down to the GApps you install. I installed a fairly small one, cannot remember the name, and i didnt get much in terms of Google Apps. Which was what I wanted.
Obviously the best option is to try all 3 out and see what one you like most, but youll need to update your recovery if you havent (going from the older posts in this thread).

Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind.

I really like GApps so it's kind of necessary to have it.

@Sicklyboy I agree, but also it's about self control and realistic thinking. We wouldn't feed a dog soda, so why feed it to ourselves? Eating unhealthy food because it's cheap is one thing, but I'm sure you know people who drink soda routinely when they should be drinking water which is free.
I get it can feel mean to say "no treat sweet beverage for you anymore" but for many people it's just in their way of life.
