If I am using 9.2.0-20J full do I still need to delete anything before attempting a downgrade on a Japanese N3DSXL?

I'm convinced it's impossible to downgrade my 3DS. I've done this 8 times now, using different builds, and still get "an error has occurred" and I have to use recovery mode. My 9.2 downgrade pack MD5 is correct, so my downgrade pack isn't incorrect/broken/whatever. I've tried different HBL entrypoints (OoTHax, HomeMenuHax, IronHax). Nothing seems to work; just "an error occurred" every single time. With and without SD card. No "fixes" work; can't boot after downgrading.

You can launch SAFEMODE instead of normal firmware via L+R+A+DPAD-UP+POWER to update your 3ds. This can unbrick your normal firmware. The one i posted first downgrades SAFEMODE, then normal firmware. TuxSH version doesnt(and steveice first build) doesnt do it in this order so both can be not finished or courrupted. In the version i poste both shouldnt get unuseable at the same time. The one i posted is Steveice10 latest code compiled + libkhax or SUlib

Thanks for the explanation @julian20. So it's safer because once SAFEMODE is downgraded, if the process freezes when downgrading the normal firmware, you can use SAFEMODE to unbrik the normal firmware, got it. But it can't recover for the same version, right? So, when 10.4 gets released, you can have only one shot to downgrade (otherwise you will need to update to 10.4)?

Format your 3ds then do the downgrade, it should work

Successful downgrade!
N3DS 10.3E -> 9.2E (used full update pack)
Menuhax -> FTP-3DS (launch then quit) -> Sysupdater (latest build of julian20 as of now)
Worked on first try this way! Thanks to everyone who made this possible!
(Wireless was on BTW. :P)

How can I be sure I downloaded the right packs for this? I searched this thread:
[MEGA] [CIA/BIN] MSET 4.X & 6.X backups, Browser backups, Update packs (All Regions)
On that one site, and managed to find (full) packs for O3DS and N3DS on 9.2U, but I'd like to know the proper number of files they should contain and an MD5 hash for the ZIPs, if possible. I don't want to rush this thing.

As you want, some people tried and everything went fine for them using that trick.
I'm happy for them, I just don't want to risk losing content I've paid for myself out of my own pocket.
Googling around, it seems you can "relink" your NNID to your console after formatting the system and it should be fine. Is this correct?
