I'd much rather this one instead but if shiny's left it to dry up then I guess GPSP is the only way to go at this time.
Currently, RetroArch's gpSP is in a more playable state, but Shiny still did some impressive work here, and before RetroArch started getting ported over. Respect is still due.

If you have .cia access there's no real reason to use either this or Retroarch imo. Just use AGB_FIRM and play the games natively without having to worry about emulation/framerate issues..

but on n3ds mgba is so good, nearly perfect, it basically is.
it has savestates :) and it can only get better in the future.
plus you have access to your .sav file, unlike vc games (at least we don't know how to access/convert it)

I would rather just use my micro with my EZ4 flashcart than use AGB_FIRM. Between the lack of options for its display, lack of key rebinding, and not being able to easily use the save file elsewhere, I don't see it as a viable option for me. If you don't mind the restrictions, great, but there's a few different reasons why someone would prefer something else.

Well, if you have an O3DS then AGB_Firm is your best bet tho

Yeah, that's true, but that wasn't my point. My point being that there are drawbacks to AGB_FIRM, so it's not the end-all-be-all solution for playing GBA games for everybody. RetroArch's gpSP mostly runs fullspeed on o3DS (CIA), though has some intense slowdowns when there's translucent effects on the screen. Luckily, I haven't had any desire to play back through any GBA games. When I do, hopefully gpSP will be in a better state, if not I'll probably dig up my micro and use that on the go.

The last time I tried mGBA (late October-ish) I was getting 40-50 fps at times in Metroid Fusion on an N3DS. I found the Retroarch GBA core to be better but it's been long enough I suppose I should give mGBA another try at some point.

I have the GPSP .Cia and it isn't "that" good, it has so much slowdowns in a bunch of games, but I see your point :)

But Retroarch and MGBA cant play Mother 3...

Sure they can, I ran it just a minute ago in Retroarch gpSP and Retroarch mGBA (haven't tried standalone in a while), both the translated version, and the original JP ROM. You're probably using a bad ROM, BIOS, or some combination of both.

Since the BIOS has become a bit of a topic, I'll just leave this here: http://tecxero.sytes.net/bucket/DumpBIOS.gba.7z

It's a legal way to get the official BIOS, for those that have a GBA flashcart. It's very barebones and you can patch it for your GBA flashcart, just it does make a save file that's twice too big. It will dump fine, you just need to go in with a hex editor and remove the empty space, which is the latter half of the file. Just start it up, and once the crap on the screen goes green, it's done. Just let your flashcart write the save to your SD card, clean up the empty data with a hex editor, and then rename it gba_bios.bin. There you go, you have your own official GBA BIOS legally.

It will work on DSs as well, as long as you're using a GBA flashcart and running it in GBA mode. I'm not trying to shove the legal option down anyone's throat, just pointing it out for anyone interested.
Do you or anyone else have the GBA dumper? the link no longer works.
