Despite store closures worldwide, GameStop remains open, claiming they are "essential retail"

game-stop-sign.jpg

As GameStop struggles with relevancy within even its own target market, the company itself still believes they're essential to the daily lives of the average gamer. In a memo allegedly sent out to workers at the chain, GameStop head management stated the following: "Due to the products we carry that enable and enhance our customers' experience in working from home, we believe GameStop is classified as essential retail and therefore is able to remain open during this time."

So, if you work at a GameStop, don't think that you'll be able to get a few days off for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While GameStop seems adamant in maintaining that they're "essential", it appears that law enforcement has shown up at certain locations, trying to close the store, only to be informed by GameStop store managers that the video game retailer has legal documentation to prove its importance during the outbreak of a virus.

gamestop wants to get fined into bankruptcy? The fine for remaining open in PA is 25,000 per 8 hours

The PA governor just upped the order from "essential business only" to "life-sustaining businesses only", precisely because of so many companies pulling what Gamestop was doing. So they might be changing their tune in PA.

Of course with enforcement starting Saturday, I'm sure they will remain open Friday to dump all that Animal Crossing and any Doom stragglers.

this whole crisis thing has every unworthy actor on the planet wave it's hand and proudly proclaim "I am evil, I just thought you should know."
It also has every damn company that ever got your email information telling you how awesomely they're handling the pandemic like, "Yeah, we've got this so under control and we're such a good company caring about our employees and customers durrrrrrrrr so thank you from that one image hosting site you used back in 2012"

Corporate told managers to refer the police to their legal department.

This guy's video is giving me motion sickness I'm actually impressed. But on topic, any person or company taking advantage at the expense of others' health and safety for profits should be held criminally accountable.

I think buying video games are the last thing on people's mind right now
People have been waiting for these games for months/years there could be 10 inches of snow on the ground and a 99% chance of death people will still go out to pick up the game.

The thing is, Amazon and other online retailers were always going to stay open and stay busy regardless since they DO sell essential goods in addition to video games. Gamestop remaining open does not have that same logic to it.

Of course, normally I'd be happy to change my purchases of physical copies to digital ones, but I put in my orders for both Animal Crossing and FF7R months ago, before this all began. If shipment of either has to be delayed a bit so that the focus can be put on delivery of medical necessities, I take no issue with that.

I'm pretty sure they're only doing this because they're desperate for business as-is.
This.

Minor possibility. Games have been "crisis resistant" as a branch in the past.

If you've got a bunch of people self isolating for weeks on end, at least give them games. (Mental health perspective.) Not sure that anyone thinks that far though. ;)

This "NEWS" here on gbatemp is mainly idiotic outrage bait. And 90% of people are falling for it.

If you, as a state are driving those measures, dont do them half assed, and rely on people making individual 'pseudo healthy' decisions.

If you want to curb the curve at one point strongly - you do it coordinated, and not with 'voluntary recommendations'.

So US currently is in 'lets prevent public revolt mode'.

Too early (or costly) to curb the curve significantly.

Let everyone that wants to buy into "aloe vera" solutions (feels good, but is BS) instead.

Because so many people are stupid, do something to prep up gastronomy and culture and, ... or they are gone.

People want to copy someones behavior so bad, you cant tell them not to. Feel free, do something. Blame someone. Join in with a gbatemp news item.

Looking at predictions for the US, based on their current numbers (which might be off, because testing is so poor there), they are estimated at topping out at 2 million deaths - currently. Which is 0.6% of people.

Which will have the US want to do exactly nothing, for good reasons.

Virus got to them later. Summer, while not killing it - will slow down spread, by virtue of less people being in tight and confined spaces again.

By winter there is expected to be a vaccine for risk groups (badly tested, so you have to weigh both risks).

IF thats the case (we dont know, because their testing is so poor to tell as someone that cant extrapolate using more information) - the US lucked out.
--

Now post BS allegations as news here and rally the collective unconscious...

People fundamentally dont understand how stupid they are, and even less how math works. Thats the main problem you are dealing with.

This is my assessment, which might be wrong.

People still very confused, what the difference between soap opera (Trumpy Trump) and actual government. Because they only consumed soap opera for years, and thought it was government. This doesnt mean, that there is no gouverment (institutions) though. What Trump does, or thinks, doesnt matter jack. If a president is that dumb, institutions run the country. Plain and simple.

And they will give you the strong hand treatment you all would like to see currently so much, at the appropriate moment. Not when you would want to, because you saw other people behaving in other regions of the world in a certain way.

Only issue with this? The data you are making that decisions on has to be valid (which is where testing comes in).

Crisis is big enough for intelligent people to have noticed it. They then ask other intelligent people. That informs action. If not, institutions would turn to media and tell them "this is the problem - why we cant act, and that we want to have changed, by the public doing this". Currently you only have small local twitter politicians tweeting "this is outrageous" at whitehouse accounts. So still veil of stupidity, with no one - really - wanting real coordinated actions yet. People are preparing in the background to get the capability (laws being discussed).

To me it seems that very few inteligent people/institutions in the field, that should know what they are doing, in the US are freaking yet. Again, I might be wrong.
-

Also, you can check for yourselves if government failed in a year, post facto. If, within a year, you see those situations were hospitals have to turn away people, or the military has to move bodies in bags, you will know, that your government failed.
-

edit:

Reason for most people being seemingly calm in the US could simply be population density. So people in big cities (public transport, ..) freak and react differently than most of the country. Both with good reason. If lower population density over vast areas of your country acts as a natural shield against fast spreads. Government really needs to do - mostly nothing. Big IF statement, I dont know. People looking at that math (crisis action teams) - do (more or less).

Reason why Gamestop isnt closed yet?

The bill does require some employers to provide full-time workers with up to 10 days of paid leave. But the requirement does not apply to the nation’s largest employers — companies with 500 or more workers, who together employ roughly 54 percent of all workers.

I'm living in a country most of you havent heard of, yet I seem to know more about US politics than anyone in here. How come?

(;) )

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Just imagine risking someones health for a game....
Deathrate is 0.8% in general (if your developed countries health systems doesnt get overwhelmed).

5% if they do (which is what everyone tries to prevent.)

And 0.6% projected currently in the US as "the worst case". (Imperial college London study (model))
(In big cities in the US it will be higher.)

Death rate of a bad seasonal flu is 0.2%.

I think your statement has no baring on reality whatsoever.

Still, giving someone flu or anything still involves the word "health" no? For a fucking game...
True. But keep perspective.

Country shutting down (with the exception of healthcare workers) also costs 'discomfort' in the long run.

Measured responses. Not moderator peddling emotional truths. (If you would ever run a country.. ;) )
