'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' PS Vita port released

If you have a PS Vita and are a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, then you are in luck. Earlier this week, modders Rinnegatamante and TheFlow announced that they ported GTA: Vice City to the PS Vita. Now the team has announced that their port of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is also available on Sony's handheld. Although they announced that this project was a WIP previously and needed optimizations, we did not know when a full release would happen. The wait is now over.

To recall, this port of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is based on the Android version of the game but this port comes with a bunch of custom patches such as:
  • Fixed camera controls for flying vehicles (including the Hydra jet).
  • Fixed broken facial expressions.
  • Fixed cheats hash key table.
  • Removed specular lighting on pedestrians.
  • PS2-like rendering.
To get started, you will, of course, need to provide your own copy of the game. The modders behind the port have shared a full setup guide over on the GitHub repository linked below, along with other tips to optimize the experience.

I'm curious...A couple years ago, rockstar gave GTA: San Andreas away as a promo for their online platform(1). Would that version work for this purpose?

Either way, I'll wait for the wiiu version. I don't even remember what kind of hacked status my vita's in...:P

(1): and later gave away gta 5 on epic store, so I doubt it was a very successfull platform.

I request Silent Hill 2's (not HD) PC game to be ported to Vita. Are you with me!?
Also, the PC version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

To those hoping for this on the Wii U, I don't know if that is going to be possible without a full decompilation which could take years. From what I understand the fact that both the Vita and Android devices have ARM chipsets that can run ARMv7 instructions (which the Android version of SA is compiled to) meant that the flow was able to just create a wrapper to run the android version natively on the Vita with compatibility and performance patches. The Wii U doesn't use an ARM chipset, so this is unlikely to be possible. It would be unable to execute code written for a mobile device natively. The Switch may be possible though, it does have an ARM chipset, but I'm not an expert on these things. It is possible it can't run ARMv7 instructions natively.

The GTA III and VC ports are different. They were complete decompilations of the PC version that were recompiled specifically for the Vita. From what I understand Rockstar left something called debug symbols in those games when they released them, which made them easier than most games to decompile.

No, it wouldn't work. It needs to be the android version since the reason the port works is that it is taking advantages of similarities between the Vita and an Android device.

That's cool! I've been (re)playing LC & VC Stories from PSP on my Vita for a while, just to have GTA on a portable. But I'm getting enough of it. I enjoyed SA quite a lot back in the day and the original VC even more! :D
