Xbox has sold 2.3 million consoles in Japan in 20 years

Microsoft has sold just over two million consoles during its lifetime in Japan, according to a new report in Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, and spotted by VGC. The original Xbox launched on February 22, 2002 in Japan, and in the twenty years since, a total of 2,345,975 units have been sold, the vast majority of which were Xbox 360s. The console breakdown is as follows:
  • Xbox – 472,992
  • Xbox 360 – 1,616,128
  • Xbox One – 114,831
  • Xbox Series X/S – 142,024
The Xbox Series X|S is off to a good start, already beating out its predecessor in just 15 months. The Series X|S is also the first Xbox console to launch in Japan at the same time as the rest of the world, and Xbox head Phil Spencer has said that he plans to improve Xbox's place in Japan this generation. Speaking to GamerTag Radio in February 2020, Spencer said "I don’t know if we’re winning in Japan any time soon, but the position that we have in Japan today from a platform isn’t acceptable to me," before getting into more specific plans for this generation. “We’re going to do a much better job with this next, upcoming launch of not waiting ten months to launch in Japan like we did last time. We’re going to make sure our services like Game Pass, xCloud and stuff are there so people will have access to it.” Game Pass was launched in Japan in April 2020, and Xbox Cloud Gaming with Game Pass Ultimate made it to Japan last September.

The report also revealed the top five best-selling games in Japan, with Dead or Alive 3 on the original Xbox topping the list with 271,149 units sold, meaning 46% of original Xbox owners in Japan bought the game.
  • Dead or Alive 3 (Xbox) – 271,149
  • Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope (Xbox 360) – 208,521
  • Tales of Vesperia (Xbox 360) – 204,305
  • Blue Dragon (Xbox 360) – 203,740
  • The Last Remnant (Xbox 360) – 154,493

I used to work in an Independent games store back in the late 90's at the height of the PS1's popularity and part of my job was replacing lasers in those made as cheaply as possible consoles. I literally did 100's of them as we were the only local store that would repair a console for you rather than just trying to sell a new console.
I also have a box of 3 or 4 PS2's with dead lasers in my loft that just are not worth repairing, not saying I've never had any issues with any other brand console because i have, just not as many as I've had with Sony consoles.
I have two friends whose ps4s will eject the disc unless the console is vertical. no idea why. one resorted to tapping down the eject sensor, which I think worked. not sure what the other did. so far I haven't had any disc drive errors with the ps3, 4, or 5.

if you can find one. saw them going on ebay for like $1,600.
Play the waiting game. You're guaranteed to get one in the coming months with a reservation. Can't imagine being so impatient for the Deck, that I'd go to ebay and pay nearly triple the highest MSRP for it.

Microsoft really tried to get into the Japanese market with the 360. To try to make games that Japanese would like, they funded Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, including hiring ex Squaresoft employees such as legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Lost Odyssey in particular is the best Final Fantasy game since 10 and what 13 really should have been. It's a shame the strategy didn't work well enough, because they really did an extraordinary job with the game. It is still available on the Xbox One though.

both of those games are on the series x as well. I got them on sale as a gold member for about $11 total. not sure about blue dragon, but lost odyssey is not currently compatible with quick resume.

I got both the PS5 and Xbox series X. I actually prefer the Xbox a little bit more. I feel the game library is much more vast ESPECIALLY with game pass. The controller is a bit more comfortable in my hands despite not being as high quality as the ps5 controller. This is surprising since this is my first Xbox console and I've always been a huge fan of Sony. Those JAP boys are missing out.

yeah, game pass is awesome. all game pass games are on sale too afaik, so you can buy them in case they're removed at some point. it's 20+ percent off, got halo infinite for $40-something iirc. just realized a few days ago that I've been paying for game pass to both console and pc, which is $14.99/month while console only is $9.99/month. I need to fix that when on the 7th, before I renew my subscription. I wish there was a yearly discount instead of three months being the max discount you can receive. that is the one stupid thing about it.

this is why mechanical disc drives are 100x better than electronic ones. by mechanical i mean disc drives like the one in PS2 slim and PS1.
press it, it jumps open like a kangaroo

While I sometimes might look like an Xbox fanboy,I'm way more of a Sony guy because of the hacking scene, and I truly feel Sony is go loose this war in the long run.The game pass might look like a gimmick 2 years ago ,it's now a dangerous rival to Sony consoles and Nintendo.
I remember those assholes from Netflix ,everybody was making fun of them when they started this streaming craze ,guess what? they owned so much the market that they're financing hundreds of movies and series yearly.
Some trend might look like laughable but soon after they swallow the market.
I really do feel Game pass is a game changer and I feel Sony themselves knows it too.
PS: never used game pass in my life .

Compared to that of PlayStation:
  • PlayStation (Original) - 19,411,000 units
  • PlayStation 2 - 24,420,000 units
  • PlayStation 3 - 10,469,971 units
  • PlayStation 4 - 9,395,048 units
  • PlayStation 5 - 1,386,078 units (so far)
Nintendo has done better with their consoles in Japan, as have several other companies (all Japan-based by the way). Even the DreamCast, an abysmal failure for SEGA, sold better in Japan than the Xbox 360, possibly Microsoft's best-selling console ever. Let's face it - Xbox is WAAAAAY overrated.

this implies that the majority of switch sales didn't even come from japan
that's insane
Switch is on the path to becoming the best most sold nintendo console ever, not sure if it will pass the DS probably not but it will beat the gb for sure making it the 3rd best selling console in the world, probably at the end of this year it will beat both gb and ps4 sales.

that's some immense success for sure
Do remember that the next console could just as easily become an insane flop though

the legal drinking age here in the US is 21, as some of you may know, but i think either it should be 18 or the age you're an adult should be 21.
    +1
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and i know what you may be thinking, "why become an adult at 21? doesn't that mean that banging an 18 year old would be illegal?"
first of all, being in a relationship with someone who's 18 is technically ok, as long as it started when they were 18, but the age gap is still weird depending on how old you are. besides, the age of consent differs between different states
    +1
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
also my reasoning for adult age being 21 is because the reason that's the drinking (and now smoking) age is because it "gives them more time to think rationally and not drive drunk"
so you should have that extra time to mature and think rationally before going to serve in the military or vote
    +1
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
tl;dr the "adult" age and the legal drinking age (and voting age) here in the US should be the same

What about making kids wait till 18 or 21 to drive? And yea is messed up, you can join army and die for your country at age 18, but you can't drink alcohol or smoke a cig til 21, is ridiculous

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
If someone is in the military they should be allowed to smoke and drink at 18.... Would help drive recruitment lol
    +3
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
We all know they do and will anyways. I think laws prevented them only pushes them to illegally do it. Even tho if was legal, most prob wouldn't even bother. Not a big deal or risque if its legal, no fun.

That's why some kids don't mind having a rap sheet or two just so they never get drafted
    +2
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
also, i think the voting age should match the adult and drinking ages too, because by the logic of giving them time to mature and think rationally so they don't drive drunk, then they should also have that time to mature and think rationally so they can think for themselves
