Sony announces price hike for PlayStation 5 in most markets

dkslkda;lsd.png

"High global inflation rates" are the cause of a lot of price hikes in various goods, and the latest to fall victim to that is the PlayStation 5. As of today, Sony's boss, Jim Ryan, confirmed that because of "challenging economic conditions", the PS5's retail price will be increasing in most markets worldwide. In Europe, prices will be going up by €50, to €549.99, in the UK the price tag is changing from £449.99 to £479.99. Other regions that are affected are Australia, Mexico, Canada, and China, with the price change being effective as of today. Japan will also see the cost of the console increase, though it will not go into effect until September 15th. For now, the MSRP of the PS5 in the United States remains the same as it has been.

The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*

  • Europe
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
  • UK

Likely just Sony taking advantage and jumping on the inflation bandwagon, to bring in some extra funds, to cover the recent legal action raised against them (not that I expect anything to come it, Sony have done some very disgusting, very illegal things and came out sqeaky clean)

in my opinion, i recommend to hold out for a while and then buy it... or buy a PC, better performance as well as games to go with it, Free Online play, Mods..... Only use a PS4 for some games now
The best part of PS5, imo, is the Elite controller they're going to release.

Play on a PC/Laptop with it and call it a day. We'll probably see Gran Turismo on PC at some point, even though there's superior racing sims.

I had to pay close to $800 to get a PS5 last year. No scalpers, but the store I bought it from would give the priority to those who bought it in a bundle with games. I'm sure nothing will change for the next 1-2 years.

EDIT: by "nothing will change" I mean that the majority of people will still have to buy these bundles to get one.

Licensing for cars is really messed up in this day and age, that's the reason we didn't had a Gran Turismo for PC yet I believe. Controller compatibility could be a issue too as the PC Racing scene has a wide range of brands and models and is heavily into customization and homemade stuff, but I believe Sony just don't care about that anyway.

Other thing you said, about the new controllers, I couldn't agree more, they really looks neat. I like nintendo style d-pads more and that's just personal taste, but is what will keep me from buying this one for PC.

"Extra Funds" so they don't have a gap in their profits. They really don't need to raise the price for any reason except greed. ._ . I wish people wouldn't roll over for this crap, but they will cuz "I need muh PS5!"

One thing that I forgot and a friend of mine pointed out is that if they really need to increase prices they could bundle a game or some games on the package. They already paid for developing those games, there is no such thing as inflation from a game released a year ago, the costs are already paid. They did that a lot for PS4 (minus the price increase).

And let's face it, today nobody is buying Destruction AllStars or Uncharted 4 anyway.

I wish they were but they are not. Scalpers proved long ago that people are willing to pay more so Sony is taking advantage of that. People will pay it and be fine doing so. I work retail In what I call a PlayStation town where people absolutely refuse to pay MSRP for an Xbox Series X but will pay for a PS5 “bundle” costing upwards of $750 USD because they absolutely dislike Xbox for some reason and will only use PlayStation.
But hey are, they have to realize all of the bad pr that will come from this. It will tank their sales for a while until they revert it, it was a stupid decision and it won’t work out the way they want it to

Destruction AllStars
That looks and should be an F2P game.

When I read "Destruction" my brain went straight to Destruction Derby. 😅 Say, didn't Sony own this IP? It's dead since the PS1 era, I think.

Alternatively, there was also Twisted Metal and the "newest" game was on PS3. Still looks and plays great.

I see this as a total win since I was just getting ready to sell of my PS5 that I never fucking use because PC makes it irrelevant

SONY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOUR JUST SHOOTING YOURSELF IN THE FOOT!
I can't imagine this was a decision they made lightly, and likely happened because they genuinely kinda had to. I know systems are often sold at a loss, but even still if the margin of that loss becomes too large thanks to chip shortages and the like, then the need to increase the price may just become inevitable.

It definitely sucks and isn't something you like to see, but in this modern world of pandemics, shortages, and struggling economies, it isn't hard to understand either.

It's inflation and it effects everyone and every product, Sony is probably taking a hit financially for every PS5 sold even after the price rise.

It's not like Sony is selling weak and outdated hardware at launch for massive profit and five years on have never had a significant price drop the way Nintendo sells the switch.
