Streaming Woes → Give Me CDDA! (Rant)

When having to choose between physical media and modern “digital only” storefronts and streaming, my decision is easy and clear: Physical!

As so often I’m representing a small minority here. But yesterday I saw my point of view confirmed once again. I wanted to hear an audio drama for children. Got the first two episodes cheaply on CD while buying groceries at Aldi. How about episode 3? Boy, those CDs filled only with 55 to 60 minutes are expensive. About 7€ to 8€ each and shipping costs extra. That is too much. Content worth some money? Yes. But this is too much.

But the publisher/producer proudly links to half a dozen streaming providers offering everything and more… for absolutely free. Seems LittleSinchen is an unprogressive, antiquated, backward and stubborn dumbass with her stupid, expensive CDs.

Spotify

I have streamed some audio books with Spotify (free version) in the past. Worked okayish. Somehow. Often problems to get the thing started, but once it started, I could hear (and record with Audacity). Getting rid of the few ads afterwards took a minute. At some point the number of ads went mad. Every five minutes the same thing (almost always the same reminder to buy premium access and no actual ads) so I stopped Spotify altogether. Until yesterday. I wanted to hear that thing, even with a ton of ads.
Long story short: Does not work. Spotify now only allows random order without paying (great for audio drama) and it plays just 9 seconds of each title before falling silent (while the browser seemingly still plays judging from the increasing playing time). I tried 15 minutes. All I got to hear was ads. Nothing else. The content would play randomly and only 9 seconds.
But they have a special offer right now: Trying premium access three months free! That’s a good deal! Clicked on “Start Free Trial Now!” → “Enter your credit card number!”
You know what, Spotify? Go and f… yourself!

Amazon Music

Boldly claiming: “Free. No subscription. No credit card required.”
Yeah! That is better. Logged into my Amazon account. Searched for the content, clicked on ▶ and… got an error. Just “Error. Try again or contact support.” For all of the titles. Something wrong with my PC? Or the browser? DRM not working?
Clicked on some random garbage music → Plays noisy music instantly.
Clicked on audio drama → Error.
You know what, Amazon? Go and f… yourself!

Onleihe (online + leihen → borrow online) – Public Library

They are working together with Tigerbooks. This service offers content for children. You can make paid subscriptions, they have special hardware as well. But they also work with the public library system. Manual sounds simple enough:
  1. Download proprietary app
  2. Tap on “Log in with public library”
  3. Select region, city and library
  4. Log in with your Onleihe credentials
  5. Borrow available media
You can’t go wrong with free and official public library access! Why didn’t I try this directly? Maybe because step 4 does not work. It logs in, offers a “Start browsing” button and goes back right to the login step 2. Rinse and repeat. The login seemingly works. Providing wrong password leads to an error message.
You know what, Tigerbooks? Go and f… yourself!

Enough already!
Maybe I’m just too dumb to use streaming. Everybody and their dog is happy with it.
I'm not against paying. I pay for the content I want. But I can’t even get free streaming to work on any PC or phone. Why should I consider paying for this non-working mess?

I’ve encountered a ton of problems with DRM infected PC games. Protected CDs/DVDs are a nightmare. But I have always been able to
a) Use the content somehow (I've enough drives…)
b) Copy the expensive stuff I bought despite stupid protections

Hope to find the CDs for a good price at some point. That will work!

Yesterday I had an actual Case on Amazon:

- Fairy Tale Audio CD from an 3rd Party Seller did not arrived.
- Made an Query with "Problem with Order" Button.
- After 2 Hours the Query was confirmed and today the Money was "landed" on my Bank Account.

Maybe not "listen" Music in Digital Shape, but buying it "digitally" (online) seems for me ok.
But honestly...if this (for me) special Fairy Tale where available on Amazon as "digital Shape",I would have bought it.😉

Lost parcels happen. When DHL almost f…ed up with the Plextor last year I was about to explode.
In all normal cases (bought new stuff) insurance covers these problems.
All in all I had less problems with physical than with digital distribution. Buying audio files (unprotected!) is no problem if the price fits. Download normal file and forget about online. Never pay for this again. Never fear it might get delisted.
I bought some audio files in one instance for a good price and never regretted it.
Those streaming "services" can [see Act 3 of Götz von Berlichingen]

have fun.
I've no idea what you are trying to say here. All I get is an empty page with Matrix effect.
What is this supposed to be?

What browser are you using/what extensions? I've found that usually it's one of my privacy extensions that breaks websites. Usually if you go into a private window (which disables all extensions by default) it fixes the issue with these sites. I usually have to do things like that to access government sites over here in the states. I like to use firefox as my daily driver, but I also have chromium installed to use as my "normie browser", usually with no extensions other than something ublock origin installed.

What are you referring to? Failed streaming or that strange, undefined link above with no explanation at all?

The failed streaming attempts were done in empty browser profiles with no extensions at all. With "firefox -ProfileManager" I create a throw-away profile to rule out problems with extensions. I was thinking the DRM would get a hysteric panic attack if anything is not like normal.

That strange link above… I opened it in my normal profile, which means everything active like Javascript as well as loading additional content from third-party domains is disabled by default. I will certainly not allow some random unknown site, showing the 1337 Matrix effect, to execute code on my machine. → 🤦‍♀️

Yeah but if your main goal is just to play n64 and GameCube you can save about $50 and have the portability option
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
True, but on 2 monitors at 4k. Its just want you want really, to each they own.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
For that texasroo guy, I'd recommend the Spell and speak as his first system.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
So they buy a pi5 kit for about $150 and say a 28" 4k display probably looking around $400 total

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again you get what you pay for, its like buying a S series for $300 but its only 1440p native, if you want true 4k, gotta get the X model for $500. But yea you right, when moms buying it anyways, you gotta stay cheap.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:

I'm designing my own entertainment cabinet for my man cave, to store all my systems, then I'm also designing a power supply/HDMI switcher so I can switch to whichever system I want, and power it also. Already picked up the cabinet board, but tinkering with my drawings before start
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
But yea, I have frogger arcade cabinet that I gutted and put a Pi4 then Pi5 into, but it never gets played much anymore, should sell it. Even when the kids come over, they don't want to play on it, just the xbox. TMNT and Simpson's arcade is still so fun on it, esp w 2 players.
