edit: to anyone finding this in the future, proton GE version 9.2 (and above, maybe, i haven't tested) fix this issue almost 100%

Original post
okay so for the life of me i can't figure out what could be causing this problem, how to fix it, and if this even is the right place to ask, i don't have anywhere else that i can ask though because this is the only "public facing" account i have on any website

the problem i'm having isn't the normal san andreas on linux problems you'd normally expect, no, i for some reason have the most unique issues that basically don't ever exist for anyone, it's not the audio being crackly, it's not that the cutscene audio is muffled
it's that the audio keeps panning in stereo from the left and right ear as if there's a roller blader attached to me from behind with a microphone that controls all of the game audio, it even affects the menus

for example, sometimes everything from menus and game sound effects will suddenly hard pan to the left ear and play almost nothing on the right ear, sometimes the other way around. for some reason radio isn't affected
i've tried the latest proton ge, it somewhat mitigates this problem, but it's still there, but it also took a lot of effort to not get it to crash

how has this one game been the most problematic to get running smoothly on linux out of my entire massive library smh

Have you checked the protondb page? Presuming you have the non definitive edition, instructions on this page might help:

https://www.protondb.com/app/12120

(note: i don't know anything about this myself)
yeah i did, nothing useful, only mentions of crackling and one single other mention of a similar audio problem, but from forever ago, nothing about a fix

I was having this exact issue and looked everywhere for a fix, your post was the only one I could find describing it in detail.

Someone on ProtonDB recently mentioned updating bass.dll as a fix for "stereo issues". I looked into this, and realized that the bass.dll that shipped with the Definitive Edition Project modpack is outdated. It has been updated in the latest version of Cleo (4.4.4). Replacing the bass.dll in my game directory with the one from the newest version of Cleo completely fixed my audio panning issue. Hope that helps.

i was using the completely vanilla version right off steam, i think, it's version 2.4.10, i'll look into this and report back. seems promising

edit: i upgraded my steam deck's SSD since i made this post and i don't have an external m.2 reader so i can pull the game off of it easily so it'll be a bit before i can test this
edit2: turns out the game doesn't ship with a bass.dll, i have no idea where this one came from, but the stereo issues happen even without it so idk

this did work, but as others have mentioned on protondb, the audio is still super low quality with no known fix yet, at least things are on the right speakers now lol, idk why it took this long for a fix to show up, hopefully the low quality issue gets fixed

I had the same problem.
It's an issue with the compatibility layer, I tried "Proton GE 9.2" and now the audio workshop as intended.
