Unable to boot into cores but roms load?

Oled switch modded here, received today. All retroarch cores just load into a black screen then back again when loading them. I have re-installed several times. Roms work though. Please help!

You don't open the core itself, you load the ROM with the core

It preloads the core, but you don't need to
