Previously, console bans have been split into normal bans and superbans.

People with normal bans could still use Nintendo's CDN, just not use the network services.
People with superbans could not use the CDN at all.

You had to do some fuckery with the CDN to get superbanned back in the time, but I heard that "Nintendo elevated all bans to superbans"...

Does this classification exist anymore? Is it possible to still get a normal ban or do you only get superbanned?

A ban is a ban. No such thing as a superban. If you download anything via the eShop CDN on a modded console, play your pirated games or run homebrew whilst online, then your console is banned.

Superbans did exist before, if you connected to the services while hacked you got banned, it only got elevated to a superban (or CDN ban) if you attempted to do something nefarious using Nintendo's CDN.

You can normally use the online services and download updates on a modded switch, as longs as you don't install any types of NSPs or XCIS (so best not use any signature patches). Also Cheating or modding in games while online can lead to bans, but that highly depends on the type of cheats and mods used and the game you are modding in. Also fucking with the online server in any way can lead to band (like using custom images for your profiles).
Atmosphere is build to be used while going online, so the default settings without any extra patches are configured for exactly that.

Normal bans allow you to download firmware updates from Nintendo servers but not games/dlc/game updates etc. "Super ban" prevents access to Nintendo servers. Both types of bans still exist.

Such bans still exist. But I guess Nintendo doesn't care anymore that much these days as long as you don't cheat online or going online with pirated content. I mean...I'm permanently online with custom firmware and still not banned.
