After years of delays, the Metal Gear Solid board game has been cancelled

After being announced in 2018, shown off in 2019, and facing two delays--one into 2020, and most recently into 2021--Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game has officially been cancelled. The tabletop game. which was set to be published by IDW was quietly abandoned back in December, with the company making the decision after numerous delays. Despite that fact, the board game's creator, Emerson Matsuuchi is still trying to find a way to get it finalized and released, after securing the rights to his design. However, now that the project is out of IDW's hands, the Metal Gear license that had been granted by Konami is no longer valid. The creator is confident in his abilities to reach out to Konami and obtain the rights once more to create a tabletop game based upon the Metal Gear Solid franchise, but for the time being, the game will not be releasing.

... The hell? Canceled? Believe it or not, but I was genuinely looking forward to this (and I couldn't care less about mgs). :(

How do you mess up making a board game? It's a board game. Not exactly a high bar to meet in terms of design and manufacturing requirements.
I got to agree somewhat there.
No, making an actual good board game isn't exactly easy. But compared to video games, it's many, many, MANY degrees easier.

Also... I hadn't realized the main designer was Emerson Matsuuchi. His three 'century' games are very well credited in the board game world (I can attest to that) , and specter ops is arguably the best hidden movement game on the planet. Whoever the 'they' is that started this project couldn't have picked a better lead.

And as mentioned elsewhere in the thread : yes, most of it is done. In fact, on boardgame Geek you can even find people who have played or even own early copies. So...I'm assuming the corona crisis forced their hand, because it's plain nuts to cancel a project like this.
