Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray.

It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it.

German Heise has interviewed Joone the founder of Digital Playgrounds at the AVN 2007 show in Las Vegas. Joone says actually said last year he is committed to Blu-ray. Now they announced four HD DVD titles in the United States. In the interview Joone says he was forced to use HD DVD, because no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his discs, because Sony was against it and they would loose their license.

If this holds true, Blu-ray is at a major disadvantage and could fail.

Wow well Sony put the nails in the coffin on this one. For those younger members here porn runs everything and chooses what wins and what fails. Sony lost early on with the beta max to the VHS even though VHS was much less quality because porn was on VHS. DVD's were first launched with something called multiple angles which nobody ever talks about anymore but it was really targeted to porn viewers....watch from many different angles....and DVDs sky rocketed, every progress ever made on the internet was created so people can get you porn quicker .... managing your business and educating yourself with the power of the net only came as a perk just like many other things from advancements in porn and we all knew the HD VS Blu Ray war would end as soon as porn went to one and not the other and ironically Sony burns their own bridge and pushes away the potential billion dollar profits and now HD DVD has won. Better put them blu ray players on eBay will you can!

Blu-ray was dead before it even started. Just looking at the sales of the PS3 shows you this. Who wants to watch porn on Blu-ray or HD-DVD when you can download it for free.

"It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it."

No matter how we may feel individually to the issue, if this IS true, then Blu-Ray is dead. The porn industry is the huge elephant in the media space that everyone can see, but don't acknowledge. There is many an article on the issue, VHS did win the format war because they allowed porn from the start where Beta did not.

"I'm not sure I buy the idea that porn wins marketing wars, but if the HD-DVD format is open to everyone that wants to use it and blu-ray is not, then sony has indeed already lost."

And true, porn won't win the mass media marketing wars, as when is the last time that you have seen a porn commercial in mass media?, but it will definatly help define a new format. And true, ANYTHING that is open to everyone is going to be a win for the consumer.

I'm not really a fanboy for either porn or Sony. I've watched my fair share of porn, and read up on the business as I am in media ventures, and I always thought it was funny how they innovate or "push" a format and don't get credit. (How one of the members spoke of multiple angles and streaming video, etc. It's a BIG business.)
And sony was once a very good company. They had product for the consumers. But they almost got too good. To where now they feel like they can take this arrogant attitide that they can restrict/make their products however and we as consumers will purchase them because they are the brand "SONY". I have yet to watch either a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disk, but I have seen shows in 1080p, and unless you are a very, and I mean very with all the variables now adays, discerning videophile/audiophile, it's really going to look the same in picture quality of both. Which makes this whole format war, if they are going for the mainstream consumer, stupid.

I hear it gets especially lonely in the military and they do have massive tech development resources.

As for the original point

While porn is no doubt important for sales there are few other things to consider:

1) The cheapest tends to be the one that wins, HD-DVD might just have the edge here regarding the "next gen formats" but also see point 2 (the consumer is fairly sensible and if a new format has nothing much to offer then they usually tell it where to stick it).

2) Nearly all DVDs are technically HD resolution already (a lot of HD TVs max resolution is that of DVDs and so called High def TV channels are DVD resolution already as well as the fact that with a bit of upscaling and few tricks which are already on some players most people (i.e. the bulk of your money coming in) can not tell the difference) not to mention they are damn cheap, well liked, well understood (both from a studio, amateur enthusiast, end user, retailer perspective), well dispersed (how many people do you know without a DVD player these days and how many video shops do you know that do not stock DVDs) and with a hell of a lot more content...

3) HD-DVD encryption has a way of being circumvented already. I do not think I really need to explain the magnitude of this one.

Really, if porn is the deciding factor in winning then shouldn't the PSP be the winner of the handheld war? Ability to convert porn to be viewable on the PSP. Yeah, this was why I bought one... but the novelty wore off really.... REALLY quick. But I can't see myself downloading HD-DVD rips of porn for a while. 18gb? For hi-res boobs? Darn...

watching porn in a handhelds its just silly... look at me i'm watching porn on the bus, or in the train. C'mon portable consoles are for gaming, NDS has way more games plus popularity then the PSP.
You cant in no way possible compare Blue-Ray vs HD-DvD with NDS vs PSP

Well, its more that were comparing a technology rather than a game system
