I understand that Mega Man ZX has special unlockable features triggered by inserting Mega Man Zero for the GBA in slot 2 on a DS Phat or Lite. For those of us who have a later DS model without a GBA slot, can something similar be accomplished using Mega Man Zero Collection for the DS? Or does this work with the GBA originals only? I can't seem to find any info on the subject via Google.

Originals only. There are two doors that only open if it detects respectively Zero 3/4 in the GBA slot, so no dice for DSi/3DS owners. That said, there are cheats to access them anyway IIRC and one of the doors is not even worth it.
Model OX kicks ass though.

Cheats for a legit cart, not a flash cart? Any idea where I can find them?
How the hell would you stick two DS carts in at once? :P
I was thinking more along the lines of detecting that the game was previously used in the system, or whatever.

That would require save data to be stored on the system, whereas for the DS (and GBA) the save data is kept inside each game cart itself.

Anyways he's talking about cheats as in AR codes, so if this is a real cart you'll need an ARDSi or something like that. You might find NitroHax as a way to apply AR cheats to real carts by cart-swapping with a flash cart, but cart-swapping doesn't work on the DSi.

So there's no way to to GBA linking with a real cart on a DSi/XL (or 3DS/XL).

This is a real cart on a 3DS XL.

Worst case scenario, could I just buy a pre-unlocked version of the cart from someone and run it? or do the GBA games actually have to be in the system whenever you run the game?

From what I've seen, all the link things require you to have the cart in at the same time.

So there's no way to do it on a DSi XL outside of a ROM on a flash cart, or buying an ARDSi to use cheats on a real cart.
Hm. Well, there's apparently an alternate way to unlock Model OX without using Zero 3 or 4, which is cool. So I have nothing to worry about.

We had our grandkids over yesterday and I got a small above ground swimming pool I filled for them to play in. Well today I woke to find 3 ducks swimming around in it. Don't mind really but they are annoyingly loud, quack quack. Gotta drain it today. Guess what were having for dinner, lol.

plus if you're making brownies or lava cakes for people with dairy allergies, you should use oil instead of butter anyway

I make rum cake for 4th July every year, I make it a week prior and then soak it in rum in the fridge all week. I flip the cake each day, and add little more rum, it soaks it up everyday, so good.
