So I saw a lot of guides mentioning installation of HDDOSD, or a patched HDDOSD that apparently supports non-sony hard drives or whatever. I downloaded the freehdboot image from here: http://www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3578 and the site also said "This is meant to be used with the Sony Browser Update v2.00". I flashed the image to an 80GB Maxtor IDE HDD although I don't have it (at least I don't think I do) and FreeHDboot and homebrew (OPL games included) works just fine on my console.
I'm pretty new to PS2 homebrew, I only got a PS2 to play the games my PS3 can't play*, and even then only because I found a PS2 on the streets. What does a HDDOSD installation look like, do I need one, and how can I get it?

*Parappa The Rapper 2, TrueCrime NYC, Yakuza and Tomb Raider PS1

What does a HDDOSD installation look like (1), do I need one (2), and how can I get it (3)?

(1)

(2) Most likely no. It's more something cosmetic. HDDOSD lets you 1) launch your PS2 games from it (instead of launching them from OPL), 2) launch PS2 apps from there (you need to install them in the header's partition, you will have to dedicate 128Mb per app).
