...someday as the wii, wii U and (N)3DS have. How come the DS (lite) still requires a flash card?

And do you think the team Xecutor solution will be a glitch chip or a flash card?

Best wishes!

because there's really nothing on the original DS. even if there was a way to run code, there's no way to store homebrew or ROMs, as it doesnt have an SD card or other storage method. game cartridges are the only way.

as for the switch, i think this is a modchip. no reasoning though besides that team xecuter is known for hardware

Where would you store the DS (lite) games?

Anyway, could the Xecuter chip be an eMMC replacement patched to their own custom flavor?

The Nintendo DS doesn't have any internal memory, only a BIOS with some hard coded programs. Games run on bare metal from cartridges, so a flashcard is required for everything.
The closest we could have is FLASHME which is no longer required since any modern flashcards can bypass security checks.

How do you propose running games without one?

I'd still recommend it though as it offers brick protection.

If it was an eMMC module or an addon module between the eMMC and the socket, it would be extremely easy to install
yeah i have a feeling this is what it is , but that it might also require 1 to 3 more wires to be soldered to the main MB along with the passthrough
and that they will probably offer 2 solutions
one for people who DGAF about on online and another that has a dual boot for online like they did with the RGH on the 360
no basis for this just pure speculation though

they always start out a bit sloppy then get more refined , they could come out with a future version that is 100% passthrough no extra wires

If it isn't too many wires I'll buy it. I do have some experience soldering (even installed leds in my translucent green n64). I'm hoping it installs in a way where I can show it off a bit in my transparent green shell I installed on my switch.

We know that the the recovery mode starts if you remove the eMMC. We also know that they have some of the cryptographics keys. So, I think they have found a way to use the recovery mode to run a custom kernel... Maybe they have bypassed another security check with a modchip, but I think they use a custom "gamecard".

What I took from their wording is that it could be software based up to 2.3.0 and will be hardware for 3.0.0 or later. This wouldn't hurt there sales if they gave us a softmod for 1.0.0 - 2.3.0 as most units will be above this. In fact it may well help their sales by showcasing what is possible with the chip for people not able to use the softmod, which will be a growing number of people each day as newer consoles hit the shelves!

i did too but team X is not going to give us any free software solutions on any FW
at least i doubt they will but they just gave everyone a heads up that the real golden FW is 2.3.0 or below and not 3.0.0

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
