Less than 24 hours after its creation, the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter drive has broken the $1 million mark.
That's more than double their $400,000 goal, and well beyond Kickstarter's 24-hour fundraising record.

You should mention that the drive was to finance the development of a new point-and-click adventure game (and not, say, Psychonauts 2).

And it's not a bad deal. Pledging $15 gets you a copy of the game once it's released (sort of a very very early preorder), access to the Steam beta, and access to monthly video updates on the development progress. I'd say it's worth it.

This sort of activity is what makes for an entitled captive audience, look at Minecraft and all the fans that are very demanding for a better quality product they likely didn't receive, just for their $10 Alpha purchase.

How did this all kick off? Did Notch just whisper someone on twitter and the donations exploded?
The goddamned speeddemosarchive speedrun-athon only raised 149 thousand dollars for charity over 5 days, and provided some entertaining skillful playthroughs of fan-favourite games.

What does Notch have to do with it?
I don't know, I thought maybe someone this thing got the attention it did because of Notch.
You tell me, how did Double Fine get a million dollars in donations in 24 hours? Who exposed them?

Think i think somewhere Notch did donate 10 grand to this project, so you may not be far off.

The game is actually just an interactive tour of the mansion you're buying for Tim Schafer.

Seriously, though, this is pretty wild. I think it will be interesting to see where this all goes next; for smaller scale projects, publishers may become obsolete in a world where smart guys with great ideas can get their funding from those interested in the game.

...Or it could end up meaning nothing. Who knows?

Tim Schafer and Double Fine's been around a lot longer than Mojang and notch and has a following aswell. Especially fans of the game genre in which they're basing their new game on. It's fair to assume it funded itself.

Think I read about it on Joystiq too.

Pretty sure I came across it on Kickstarter itself when it was at around ~30k. Didn't think too much of it until I caught up on Dirt Nap and realized that it was the same Double Fine. =P

Being linked on Penny Arcade probably didn't hurt public awareness either.
