Never played any of the series (but am about to start) and know nothing about them.
Can someone please explain why the release order went from V to IX to VI?

IV was first number 4 a remake
V was released number 5 also a remake
IX was released number 9 a continuation of the series
VI was released number 6 a remake and continuation of previous remakes
This is just translations though the real release(in japan) was

IV
V
VI
IX

VI is just now getting translated though

4, 5 and 6 on DS are remakes, 9 is a whole new entry in the series.

Why did it go from 5 to 9 to 6? BECAUSE 7 ATE 9!

But seriously, it was likely just a business decision. SE was on the fence about actually releasing DQ VI here in the states, but Nintendo took on the localization instead. Methinks someone at Nintendo was particularly frustrated at the lack of completion of the games here in the states.

That's just my opinion, though. No one really knows.

Anyways, 4 and 5 are remakes. 9 is new. 6 is a remake of the SNES game that never made it to the States, so 6 is technically new here too.

Start anywhere you like, but I'd leave IX for last. Once you play IX, it will be hard to go back to the older gameplay conventions of IV-VI.

What? IX is 9, X is 10, XI is 11, and XII is 12. IIX would be 8, if VIII wasn't. Unless you mistook IIX to mean one of the numbers I listed, I have no idea what you mean.
