This topic is for people who want a idea for a DS Homebrew or someone who has a good idea! I'll try to update this weekly. I no longer can update this, so if you want to see the ideas: go look at all the pages!

You can post a idea if you want but please give as much info as you have.

NO GAME IDEAS ONLY APPLICATIONS. GAME'S AND APPLICATION'S NOW!

Tapper said:
The problem with this thread is that none of the people SUGGESTING projects have a single clue about how the Nintendo DS operates - obviously, because otherwise they'd be writing the projects themselves. (There are some exceptions clearly, don't get you're panties in a bunch)

Lemme throw out some problems, complexities and general information to help the community better understand what is and is not possible with the DS at the moment.

Rules Of The Game:
Nintendo DS Operating System.
Unlike the PSP, the DS does not have a resident operating system. Once an application is launched, the firmware is overwritten in memory with the running application. In addition, any automatic features (such as a child lock key combination) requires a modification to the device's firmware. A daunting task, and one not easily completed on newer DS models. (Simply loading the new firmware requires shorting several pins to bypass a safety)

Custom Firmwares.
Not impossible, but certainly quite difficult and rarely worth the trouble. And seeing as the hardware of the DS is still not FULLY understood, I'm not sure a custom firmware would be wise. It's rare you'd find a good reason to fully replace the default firmware. Besides, it's becoming increasingly more difficult with the newer model DS's on the market.

WIFI Limitations.
Many wifi-oriented applications are possible. The only thing to keep in mind is the very low bandwidth speed. Some genius decided to cap the maximum transfer speed of the Nintendo DS to a particuarly low amount. Without getting real technical, this can seriously limit it's capabilities. For instance, streaming radio at any bitrate over 48kbps or so CANNOT be streamed fast enough over the connection, so it spends lots and lots of time buffering. WIFI applications are great - just take into account transfer speed. You don't want to be copying ROM files back and forth. That also includes the bittorrent client. I'd love to see one, just remember it's going to be SLOW.

Multiple Applications.
It's been pointed out, but i'll reinstate it. The Nintendo DS can only run one application at a time. That means that once a program is launched, you can't launch another. That means no background music players, screen streamers or anything like that. I'd love to see it happen, but the DS just isn't designed that way.

EXCEPTION: There's one possible exception, but I see no sign that it's ever been attempted. Some of the cheat engines for the homebrew cards support 'real time cheats' and soft rebooting with a key combination. I suspect when enabled, these features tack on additional code to the ROM before launch - this explains why these features sometimes (but rarely) cause problems with the ROM themselves, causing weird glitches and freezes. They work for the most part. This leads me to believe that it's possible to write a program to 'wrap' a ROM before launching it, and run a little bit of your own code at the same time. I'd love to hear if anyone thinks this is possible, or has tried it.

If you used any of these ideas please give credit to the user who had the idea.

Well my not really idea but hope is for a homebrew app that can act as a really good gui. Not just the R4 look a like Os menu but a replacement firmware for the G6 that has more features and good rival the official firmware of both m3real (sakura) and ak rpg/2 (bliss and other loaders).

Though i do know that it would probably never happen. As it would take a lot of time and need to have updates every now and then for rom compatibility but hey it's a idea.

About an app that you access your computer's hard drive wirelessly through Wi-Fi. Like, suppose you have a low memory chip (like 1GB) and want to delete a rom off your card and get a new one off your hard drive (if you have rom datatbase full of your favorite games). Or if you want to copy saves directly from your chip to your hard drive? (Not sure all cards can do what I mentioned, like copying, deleting, etc but AK2 can).

So like Automatic Saving Utility via Wi-Fi.

Note: You should only require a Slot-1 card. No GBA expansions.

Name: DLDI DS patch
Idea by: Me (playallday)
Level: Easy to Medium
What for: On the go patching (aka: patching on DS), this can be useful for people who cannot access a computer and download stuff directly to their DS. Some cards have auto patching but some homebrews don't work with it.
How: Chishm DLDI Source code; It's in C so it won't be too hard to convert.

DS side DLDI patcher

There's already DSFTP. But copy copying ROMS and etc. wirelessly is very, very slow. It's much easier to just connect your MicroSD card to a computer.

My Idea?

maybe a homebrew that can replace arm7.bin for us? There's DLDI patcher, so I think accessing files from NDS is possible. Now, if only we can "patch" the arm7.bin, it can help lots of user (well, maybe only R4 users.....)

or a converter to convert videos to .dpg in NDS, so no need to convert it in PC, not sure how this helps

Workout tracker-
Type of exercise/number of reps/how much weight
Listing of cardio exercise, and amount of time or distance traveled
Weight/measurement tracking (body fat calculator?)
Maybe some neat stats to see how you have improved.

This would make the NDS the perfect tool for the gym- music/movies/ability to see what I benched last week.

Sorry no game ideas as it says it the top. I'm not allowing game ideas because the list is endless.

Progress Quest is a game in the loosest possible sense. Essentially, it's an RPG that plays itself, that you just run and and leave alone, requiring no interaction on the user's part with the exception of rolling the character at the beginning. Considering the simple 'gameplay' mechanics, and an 'on-line' version that already exists for the computer versions that would possibly be adapted for Wi-Fi, I thought it could've been exempted from the 'no-game' rule.

That said, if it's not allowed, then how about a memo-pad/alarm that displays things you've written down at user-set times, to act as reminders? (unless Moonshell has an option like that already)

I'm all for a BitTorrent client for the NDS. While speeds would obviously be limited, it'd be nice to drop the innocent looking DS somewhere at an active hotspot to get some downloading done.
