Google GDC 2019 gaming event coverage - Google Stadia unveiled

Google is hosting a special gaming announcement set to take place at this year's GDC 2019. It's finally time to see what the company has up its sleeves, and what they have planned for the future in regards to gaming. The stream is now live, and you can watch the above video, or check back here to read GBAtemp's live updates.

Google wishes to build a game platform for everyone, bringing together all forms of gamers. This has been named the Stadia.

The Google Stadia will run on as many platforms as possible, from the Chromecast, to Android, to PCs, where games will be streamed using Google's low latency technology.

When watching games on YouTube, you'll be able to click a single "play now" button to instantly try any supported game in your browser, without downloading, without updating, or without any interruptions.

The goal is to lower the barrier to entry, so that gaming is more accessible.

Google will also be making their own controller which will connect through wifi to the host game session in order to reduce input lag. There will be a share button and a Google Assistant feature.

Right now, Stadia supports 1080/60, but at launch, it will support 4K, and even 8K.

Unreal, Havok, and Unity engines will support the hardware, which will run off Linux. Each game will run off of Google's data centers.

ID Software has gotten their upcoming DOOM Eternal working on the Google Stadia, and will be bringing it to the platform.

Google will also have its own first party development studio, Stadia Entertainment, which will create games for the platform.

As someone with a 1gb/s ffth connection at home, im interested in this. Im curious how well it will play

Even if they are successful, i dont see streaming replacing traditional gaming anytime soon

So I played the project stream and I'll tell you right now that I had zero delay between input and the actual game. I hate assassin's Creed but I found the graphics capability to be amazing. If your worry is that you can't archive the games you like and play them that seems a bit dramatic. Can you archive games that are multiplayer only like fortnite or apex? PC versions of games will still exist just like how you can still get Blu-ray movies even though you can stream it. This thread is being dramatic cause they can't pirate streaming.

So since it's streaming-only, I'm guessing the actual hardware specs are potato-level? I'll take a hard pass on the Ouya 2, thanks.

Well, that's the strange thing about it: It doesn't require additional hardware. So, if you want to play on a potato-level smartphone or laptop, you can. Just like you can with PS Now already.
This might be an entry drug to streaming and actually it is more pragmatic than what you'd expect from Microsoft and Sony, who might release extra hardware to keep relevant. What Google pulls here, however, is nothing more than providing a platform to access from whichever device you prefer. It's not like this is new, but it might be the most serious attempt at that yet, because they can even add it to their already existing infrastructure of software.

Since all this will enable lots of people to try it out from the get go, it might in the worst case (from a consumer perspective) even become main... stream.

So, please, fellows, stay strong and hold against it! For the future of gaming!

I am not buying into something I cannot own. I will never buy a game I cant own. And this generation and its dlc is why I am leaving gaming until they get it together.

There is no way to pack game with all of this - for example game updates, but that thing was old days when only revisions of game surfaces on game card to market.

This could be good... but we have to manage our expectations and know that what they are showing is a proof of concept. The final product will be maybe a 1/4 of what you saw today with other limitations.

If it's optional, why not? It's no replacement for regular downloads, but for those people who don't have a decent PC and might want to play a game here and there, it's likely a lot cheaper than buying a 1000$ machine.

I'm actually quite excited about this. It could end up becoming a nice to play titles I'd otherwise not be able to play due to hardware constraints.

I don't see how that would not be a bad thing as it means you will never own anything on that platform.

Imho, owning the games is not that important. I rarely come back to games after some years. It's not bad if you have a "I already used it so it's cool" approach.

But I know most people do not think that way tho.

and since games will be streamed Google also resolved all the potential hacking/pirate issues!
smart move google very well played ;p

google 1- 0 stingy pirates hahahahaaaaaaaa
Why would a Pirate (Me) use it anyway?

We have Steam In-Home Streaming, Parsec ect

And whats stoping someone from hacking and making there own service/way to play games

I'm seeing the pricing model something like this:

- 29.99/month for the service
- 39.99-59.99/AAA game
- 5.99-19.99/indie game

And at the end of the month, what do you have to show for it? Literally nothing in your name.
