Okay, that post is quite old, but I still want to preach in favor of "Pimp My Wii":
"Pimp My Wii" does that safe-upgrading; it uses waninkoko's firmware updater as base (or has the same behavior) then applies the needed patches (You don't need to bother if you should enable/disable each patch for each IOS that will be downloaded, as the required ones are already pre-selected, but you can "customize" them. (Trucha, ES_Identify, NAND_Access and another (I don't remember which one it is) are the available patches. If you have trucha-fixed IOS(es) that should be TB-restored, Pimp My Wii will re-download then patch them.
It also have a english/french interface (chosen automatically with Wii regional/language settings).
I really think that is would made things simplier by using Pimp My Wii, but again, it's just an idea, and you are the boss.
Edit:
@ Chris_Skylock:
I'm glad that you finally got over it and succeeded in your [CIOS install]/[Wii Modding].
Deviyl said:And including upgrading would be a bad idea for anyone reading this in the future. As it is now, the guide will work on any Wii that is out at the moment. If Nintendo decides to release a new update tomorrow that disables all of this.. wouldn't want people updating. Updating is a personal choice and can be left to the modder to decide.
