Incorrect. Emulators are legal.

BIOS dumps of a console are illegal, that's protected software property. ROM dumps of your own games are also not illegal, sharing ROM dumps is illegal.
technically if you make the BIOS dump yourself it would also be legal afaik.

If it launches on 3.0.0, it will be the last. Don't be surprised if it's forced 3.0.1 with the patch on the cartridge. It hasn't hit retail/review yet so its going to be on pace with firmware updates.

If it launches with 3.0.1 on the cart, I predict a good number of threads of people crying about how they updated.

So a lot of threads about people complaining they updates to 3.0.1 and a lot of threads of people complaining they can't play because it requires 3.0.1

lets be real everyone will use emulators for piracy, just because it's technically legal to dump your own shit doesn't mean anyones gonna do that.
Oh, so would buying metroid fusion at a garage sale be illegal as well since nintendo doesnt get money for it? They arent getting paid for resale of these retro games, why does it matter if you use dumps vs dumping your own? Its definitely not piracy to emulate.

Emulators always have been used for piracy. But pirating a game that is no longer being produced (and hasn't for years) is imo different than pirating current games. The current games are still giving the creators money, but my downloading pokemon red won't lower the amount of money the devs previously made while it was still being produced and sold.

Look at all the money developers are gonna lose for the games they no longer either have the rights to and/or don't have on any digital service  Let's face it, older ROMs, again, that aren't available through digital services don't cause developers to lose any money. Only ones losing money are eBay scalpers.

Damn it a second switch bought ...
This time I buy the colored version hoping it'll be below 3.0.0 ...
Hmm, I'd probably rather just buy $300 worth of games at this point. More importantly, I do worry that an exploit this early could noticeably affect game sales (specifically online-focused games) on Switch and further drive away third parties.

That worked out pretty well with the PS3, right? IIRC, 3.51 is the only firmware that's hackable on the PS3.

Edit: 3.55

Up to 3.55 you can just install CFW easily. You can downgrade some consoles to 3.55 using hardware. There are a few consoles that can have CFW installed using hardware without going to 3.55.

If you have metldr2 then you can't have CFW yet, there are people looking at it. There isn't much urgency because there are plenty of exploitable consoles, but a lot of them have started to die due to manufacturing issues.

People thought the DSi was unhackable when the save exploit bugs were fixed, but it's springing into life.

Predicting whether another hack will come or not is hard.

Companies argue it is lowering the amount of money they are making. They say: "If you wanted pokemon red so bad, and third party emulators and piracy were an imaginary thing, you would purchase a 3ds and the pokemon red from the eshop with WiFi capabilities." In case they are not offering the title they replace the last part to "...you would purchase a 3ds and the latest pokemon installment for 50+ USD".

Go figure. In any case, I can only see greed there (both ends).

But with the switch's efuses we won't get the luxury of being able to hardmod downgrade
