Suggestion It's been a good number of months now: will we EVER get GIF avatars back?

A lot of users had GIFs for avatars in the previous versions of the Temp. You know, the simple, repeating kind, no screamers or anything like that.
That all disappeared when the Temp went XenForo-powered, and we never got to know if it's returning.

So... will it return?

I hope not, I think they are incredibly annoying most of the time.

The purpose of an avatar is to help members identify each other easily, not draw attention away from the post.
A still image does the former while animation does more of the latter.

And lets not forget they increase the file size of the page, making page loads more sluggish.

Animated avatars are nice and all, but some are extremely annoying.
I never used a gif as me avatar tho so I won't exactly miss that feature.

has anyone tried uploading a .gif that is exactly the same size as current avatars here? maybe they wouldn't get resized, so the .gif wouldn't get broken...

I've seen people with animated GIFs in their signatures; would that be acceptable? Well at least if the content wasn't offensive? I think that'd be okay.

I liked animated avatars, especially considering they're currently animated on profiles, but not on the forums.

My proposal: bring them back, but make an option for each user that can disable animations for all avatars.

Some animated avatars are good, but most are annoying. Perhaps a low file size limit would be a better option then?
Something like 50kB or so...

The picture stays still on the forums, but if you click it, it moves in the profile card pop up.

TBH, i'm fine with the ability to have a moving sig, even though I dont.

it's because you uploaded a picture that isn't exactly the right size for avatars, so it got resized.
And resizing converts to .JPG (a still image).
I'm just wondering: if you upload a file of the right size, does XF still try to "resize" the image, or does it display it as is ? (as gif)

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm

i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
