This year I'll be taking part in #JRPG2016, a gaming event where we compete to see who can clear the most JRPGs from their backlog before the end of the year. With so many great-looking JRPGs releasing this year, it seems like a good time to get around to beating those older ones.

Anyone can join, it's just for a bit of fun between groups of friends really, and to give a little incentive to play those games that have been sitting in your backlog since the dawn of time. There is no prize (apart from bragging rights) and no donation drive involved. And if you don't like a game, stop playing it! This isn't supposed to be an endurance test. Maybe you'll fall in love with one of them and find your new favourite game of all time, or discover a composer whose work you enjoy. We just want to celebrate the existence (and recent resurgence) of the genre.

What you personally class as a JRPG is down to you. If you think Valkyrie Profile fits but Ys Seven doesn't, that's fine. Count them the way you and your friends agree to.

Twitter users can use the hashtag above to keep track of how many games they've beaten, or to share news and discuss the genre with like-minded people. However, you don't have to use Twitter if you don't want to, it's just suggested as a means of helping you to keep count.

Lostleader has made a video explaining the event in more detail:
