Pardon me for asking but I'm on the 6.X official firmware line. Is there a reason I should ever consider updating and running new Kosmos packages? Aren't there homebrew apps that allow installations without requiring firmware updates, or have things changed?

Ehm...you can update if you want. CFW and Homebrew works on the latest firmware.

Firmware bypass method wouldn't work for newer games, that why you should update.

If you don't use Autorcm and update officially you would burn your fuse, possibly getting ban also.

I have zero interest of going online. I made the decision to hack my system after the appalling online trial period.

I read in another thread that GoldLeaf is the only application that can install and bypass the 8.0 firmware update for games. Is this true? Because I'm only updating because I was confused about sigpatches, though I've never had problems.

It used to be but it is no longer correct as newer games firmware bypass method wouldn't work, it depends on what firmware the game/update was developed under which sdk. Sig patches allow you to run unsigned homebrew and games.

Okay, so if I were to give an example here, I should update to 8.0 if I wanted to play anything that recently came out like Mario Maker 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3?

And if I'm correct in assuming that I should do that, the best way of doing that is to install ChoiDujourNX, run that, update to the current firmware, and repackage my payloads to their current versions? Apologies for asking what might appear to be dumb, I only ever hacked the system; I never updated a thing to it after Smash came out.

It depends on games, just that newer games using the bypass method wouldn't work, that why people recommending to update. You should update via ChoidujourNX if you don't want to use autorcm. If you were to update you would need the latest CFW file.

So, to make sure I'm not going to break my system...

- Use ChoidujourNX to update while in homebrew
- Update SD card and payload to current Kosmos/homebrew stuff to account for the update
- Good to go

That's it, right?

Update CFW files and sig patches first, then update via ChoidujourNX with the correct firmware file, from site like that darth site.

Yeah that should be fine. You can do them in either order.

For future reference, you can always update your CFW without updating your Switch firmware version.

These don't sound like the same things. I need to find sig patches and correct firmware files now too?

I apologize for so many posts but this stuff seems so confusing to me. I also use Atmosphere, so considering the latter of the two posts, couldn't I just be running an 8.X version of that without even touching my 6.X Switch? I wouldn't need ChoidujourNX is that could be done, no?

If you don't feel like updating your Switch firmware to 8.1 then yes you can just update Atmosphere to the latest version. Atmosphere doesn't care what version your Switch is on. You can always update to the latest version of Atmosphere regardless of what version your Switch firmware is. However, Switch games do care which firmware version you're on, and some won't work unless you update to 8.1.
