Doing this would promote "quality over quantity" more.
It could also come with a like counter under the message counter on the "mini-profiles" next to posts.

nah that'll lead to super skewed medal distributions.
mods and other high-visibility users will rake them in, the rest will be begging for likes.

I would actually be interested in seeing how a system like that could work. Although currently it seems like it would be rather hard to introduce such a system without completely nuking the entire "Like" system and starting from scratch.
I guess they could add a system at the start that simply separates "Likes" from the EOF from the rest of the forums. Giving a solid base from there without completely nuking everyone's Likes.
Here's my idea for a basic formula:

Funny likes = all EOF likes + half of remaining likes
Useful likes = half the non EOF likes

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I also had the idea it would be neat to make a status of "dev" to reward those that work for the scene, to be awarded on am annual basis with a nomination and vote system.

But then I thought of all the people that would make hello world programs or fork someone's work and add very little who would all be demanding dev status.

In theory that could work and there could be a script put into place that can separate the current EOF likes from the rest of the forum likes. I am not totally sure how easy a system like that is to setup, but it would give a solid base start from.
I would love to see a system where Likes could be properly rewarded.

That sounds so good on paper to properly tag people in the forums so people know who to turn to, but could easily be so messy. Like you said, everyone will think they are deserving the title of "dev" and it will just become a clusterfuck.

I think it could work, but only if it was a carefully crafted automatic system without anyone having any (visual) influence. Then there'd be nobody for them to whinge to. And there'd have to be a new forum rule that no one is allowed to ask for votes or campaign in any way.

Once again going with "in theory" this sounds like a good idea and personally I love a system with user groups like, "Devs," "Testers," "Specialists," etc. Basically so people know just to who to ask when dealing with issues or even who to send their work to, and what have you. This could make a more solid system with better communication. That's of course if people use it properly and the titles don't get abused.

ok i was hopping a flood of likes, (was hoping about 10-20 likes) but the point is.. likes are mostly earned through shitpost, or comedic replies.. sure, a very helpfull reply or constructive post also earns likes but you can do it quickly with shitposting
I put a link in my sig that that was a "like" link for some random post. I think it had about 60 likes before I removed it

That's why you need the tag of "scriptkiddie" too

I'm gonna have to say no to this one. Lets look at youtube.
YouTube executive, "Let's make it so that creators get money based on the amount of likes they have."
This would be a bad idea becasue a lot of people forget(?) to like comments. I hardly ever like comments/videos here or on youtube mainly because i don't even bother or care.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I still stand by my experience level suggestion :creep:

Likes are meaningless, 90% of my likes are from the EoF, for stuff completely unrelated to the forum. Someone looking at my profile could get an entirely false impression that I'm useful around here, when all I do is post funny pics.
Wait, I thought that is all you do...

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
    +1
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
