Once you've beaten the game once you can save anywhere.

If you haven't beaten the game, either finish a mini-dungeon (the small tower), a world dungeon (the castle for each world), or unlock a locked area (by using your star coins). All of these scenarios would let you save after.

Be careful on the use of star coins, though, as they are limited (the ones you can unlock). Also, getting star coins can get a bit difficult as you progress, so use it sparingly.

Even when i save, it doesnt load the save back up on my M3, CF card version (with passcard 3). Anyone know what's up? I'd kill to really dig into this game.

Did you make sure there is an existing SAVE file ifor New Super Mario Bros in the NDSSAVE folder.
If no SAVE file exists (.dat file) in the NDSSAVE folder of the same name as the game, it will not save any progress.

Example:

Name of NDS Game File on the CF Card: New Super Mario Bros.nds
Name of SAVE File in NDSSAVE folder on the CF Card: New Super Mario Bros.dat

I think paying $40 for the game is a lesser effort than killing people

Try redownloading the rom... wait, there where two versions, the psyds was the correct one I think.

I'm having trouble with this too...

I used the pre-patched rom and M3, gave it to a friend who couldn't wait to play it, he said half the time the saves worked and half the time they didn't, which is stranger than them never working.

What's my best bet? just use the psyds one, patch it myself using the m3 game manager?

also, (off topic) what software can I use to keep track of which roms I have and whether they're the correct versions?

well, if the prepatched version isn't working, why wouldn't your choice go with the clean dump? Unless you prefer non-functional games.

offlinelist, ndscrc or nintenren can keep a verified list of games

Well, at the time I had two versions - the prepatched version, which ran and seemed to save, and an unpatched which didn't run at all (mind you, with older M3 firmware).

Thanks, I'll try to download all three, see what works for me.

@SylverReZ, the other game where I found newgrounds is new york shark

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

The 2006 versión was made when the flash portal was made

Many people thought it was lost, but was discovered that he hid it on the same page.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's been there for a long time, too. People who search for lost media don't look hard enough lmao.

@SylverReZ, also the pico 2 demos used to be only for the newgrounds patrons but they are on internet archive too (https://archive.org/download/picos_school_2)

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
Iirc the demos were removed from newgrounds in 2022
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, or well only the demo with mindchamber's style was on newgrounds

Fun fact @SylverReZ: iirc one of the goals on the fnf Kickstarter stated that pico 2 would be finished but the Kickstarter didnt get enough money for that goal to be fullfiled
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, FNF sucks, their community is toxic as hell.

@SylverReZ its a single player game

@The Real Jdbye, Yea but it has a shitton of mods with their own songs and stuff
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@The Real Jdbye, and quite a lot of people involved in those mods get cancelled

Newgrounds wasn't the birth of FNF; rather, it was games where you beat up celebrities and parodies.
