Family friend Tony Watkins wondered if Taylor could enjoy a game of WiiSports with his children, and with a simple four-hairband fastening, Taylor was having fun just like everyone else. Mr. Watkins wrote to Nintendo with the story, and they promptly sent a free Wii console to the Smith home. Taylor now plays baseball at home with her siblings, causing nothing but smiles for everyone. Said Mr. Watkins,

“This is the first time she has been able to play electric games with her family and it’s great to see her smile.”

She's playing and she's loving it, why can't you guys be happy about it too?

Seriously. It seems lately that most people at GBATemp do lately is take anything they can find and find some kind of way to tear it apart and make it look bad. Why is everyone here getting so negative?

I agree with not being so cynical and trying to find the good in everything and all that, but this is disgusting.

But if I were the kid, especially one that constantly strives to be treated as a normal person in the face of my disabilty, I would be totally offended that they were blatently using me as a marketing tool.

In fact I wouldn't accept it and I'd make sure that whatever media/publications knew exactly how I felt about this.

They are using this poor disabled kid, not helping her.

This is just my opinion of the situation.

So much negativity in this thread.

Was this a marketing ploy? Odds are, yes. The fact of the matter is, this little girl is happy but let's be honest, her life is never going to be easy. This was a genuine opportunity for Nintendo to do some good and I'm happy to see things like this still happen nowadays. And as for Nintendo giving a Wii to a blind child, so what? I remember a while back when I was reading one of my gaming mags (EGM I think...), that there was an article about a blind gamer who could pretty much dominate anyone in the world in any type of fighting game. Think twice before you look down on someone because of a disability.

It is indeed odd to donate a gaming system that requires extensive/intensive use of muscles in the limbs to one suffering from a muscle disease, although it is very kind and generous of Nintendo to do so.

It would have been a better idea to help her condition through treatment, but hey if the kid is happy then thats all that matters.

The success prompted Mr Watkins to write to Nintendo for help, which came in the form of a new console delivered to the Smith family's Corio home for free.

Taylor and her siblings happily played with their new console yesterday.

She could barely wipe the smile off her face and neither could anyone else.

``This is the first time she has been able to play electric games with her family and it's great to see her smile,'' Mr Watkins said.

What alot of negative remarks.
Publicity stunt or not, its not like Nintendo forced it on them. Mr Watkins wrote to Nintendo (in hopes of getting a Wii) and Nintendo gave them a Wii.
She is happy and that is all that matters.
