I've just finished it and something is bugging me about the story.
So they are not in the future. Family goons know this, scientists don't. It's how they were convinced to work on the time machine.
But what about the random people you meet on the fake future. Like the girl in the Hotel and her grandma or any other people you ran into?.
They were obviously not kidnapped. So they were working for Clive/Dimitri all along? If so why would they help Layton?
And here's a related Star Trek quote Time travel. Ever since my first day in the job as a Starfleet Captain I swore I'm never let myself get caught in one of these god-forsaken paradoxes. The future is the past, the past is the future. It all gives me a headache.
