Originally announced back in July, it appears that Sony's rewards program, PlayStation Stars, is ready for launch. The program is live in Asia today, and will come to the Americas on October 5. It will finish its rollout by coming to Europe, Australia and New Zealand on October 13.

Users can enroll in the program through the PlayStation app on iOS and Android, or through the PlayStation website. It will be available through consoles sometime in the future.

As previously announced, Stars will allow users to collect rewards by completing different campaigns or missions. There are two types of rewards: loyalty points and digital collectibles. Points can be redeemed for PSN wallet funds, select PlayStation Store products, or exclusive digital collectibles.

The digital collectibles will be "beautifully rendered, digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony's history of innovation." For example, all users will receive the "Star Gazer Telescope" just for joining, and others available will include Punto the Gondolier from Ape Escape 2 and the PocketStation. PlayStation also emphasizes that these collectibles, while rare, are not one-of-a-kind and are not sellable or tradable, distancing themselves from NFTs or any kind of blockchain technology.

As for the type of missions, there will be a generic "monthly check-in" mission for simply playing any game. Other missions might be to get certain trophies, or even to be the first to platinum a particular game in your country or region. One of the first campaigns will be called "Hit Play/1994" and will task users with identifying games through song-based clues. If users launch the correct games, they will receive a special collectible. PlayStation Plus users can also earn points for spending money on the PlayStation Store.

Perks and benefits will be doled out based on a user's status level. There are four levels, determined by how many non-common trophies a user has, as well as their full game purchases from the PlayStation Store. (There's no clarification on exactly what a "full game purchase" is, whether it means purchasing a game not on sale or buying games of a certain size or price point.) Users will maintain the level they achieve throughout the calendar year they achieve it, plus an extra thirteen months.
