Well as the title suggests i want to purge, but what you ask? Well when the time comes maybe my 28TBs worth of data. Now i know all about the software side of it with programs that do this (which i also have) including but not limited to: Active@ killdisk, DBAN etc. Now they're good and all but ultimately they're flawed in the sense of time

I bought another 2TB WD 64MB cache HDD a while back and little did i know the HDD was faulty but before acting up it decided to hide it's true state. So i started pouring in data and then i found out it was faulty to which i needed to mail it back to get a replacement. Now i wasn't going to do that with just a format or anything i ran Active@ Killdisk and choose to do a US DoD kill. Now this has 7 passes and i put a custom 95% verification at the end instead of the usual 30%. OMFG this took like 5 days the passes alone only because i left my pc on all day everyday. How long would if of taken if i did another kill method such as gutmann? (this is not where i based my name from) It has 35 passes, that's maybe 5 times longer or even more!

Now let me paint you a image. I have some 2TB hdds and also some 1TB (a few WD my passport ones i got for portability) and a few lower capacity ones (old portable ones that i disassembled and mounted to my big hdd only case) all connected to my main pc all the time apart from the portable ones. There i am happily fapping to my pr0nz and then much to my amazement i get v&, i may have a max of 15 seconds before they're in my room. What do i do then? Ask them to come back in a couple of months when all my data has been purged

What i need is some sort of device/ tool that fucks up my hdds real fast and please don't say a mircowave though that does work i don't want to have to unscrew all my hdds and run downstairs to my gaint sized microwave that i don't have to purge my data. I also don't want power tools, i want to keep the hdd looking intact until you try to use it or the purge just f**** data so the hdd is fine and reusable

I don't know how a hard drive works fully but i know the basics (platters, a head etc.) but would a magnet work? Maybe only one kind of magnet? Because there are different kinds of magnets out there. Now these are all your standard 3.5" hdds but i wouldn't need a method to do this if they increased usb capacities which is at the moment at 256gb and it costs like $600

. When/ if SDXC supports it's full capacity of 2TB or even if it doesn't 1TB is fine

i can have portability, purgability and loads of expandability to play with though i might have to wait a really long time for that to happen (i'll happily pay the money if it does come out expensive) so for now i need a solution to my problem not a day dream into what my come in the future.

All and Any suggestions appreciated apart from the ones listed above.

lol just mail it back, they prolly wont even read whats on the drives, western digital are a huge company and they dont have time to trawl through people's hard drives, I have RMA a dodgy hdd's with warez and porn on and no come back from it, so I think maybe what your doing is overkill, if your that worried about sending a dodgy hdd with data on then just go buy a new one and throw the old one in a fire or something.

You misunderstood lol, the faulty hdd i sent into WD was a while back i already got a new working one. Now i just need a quick way to purge my data in case of an emergency.

You could send the drive into an MRI tube if you need powerful magnetic fields - Those things take a punch in the range of whole Teslas (several hundred times the strength of refrigerator magnets).
I doubt even Neodymium magnets suitable for home use are capable of erasing a disc - but maybe with enough of them, you might manage. I have a small stack of them, and I keep them on the other end of the room from computers (though my laptop has not been harmed by being within 2 meters of distance, and I have stopped using CRTs).

And what is so bad about pr0nz that you are trying to get rid of it? It is not like WD will present the contents to your family. Unless of course you have little kids getting raped in it, but then you have bigger problems than a broken hard drive.

Hmmm but here are a few problems:
1) They're to big i can't fit one of those in my room
2) Where the f*** would i get one?

I'm sure if people saw you run downstairs with a hard drive in your hand, heading for the microwave, they'd think it's more suspicious than you quickly closing out of something on your computer.

You want a hard drive degausser. It'll demagnitise all data from hard drives and tapes. You can get small manual ones, or large type ones. Enjoy.

I think what he is looking for is a program that will encrypt your hard drives to some level that if you do not know the pass phrase you will not get the data....

That would be my suggestion, encrypt your hard drives with the strongest encryption you can find.

If the FBI or CIA busts in your door wanting your DATA... then the only safe thing is encryption.

Well if i did wanted anything like that i would of just gone for something like truecrypt it does the job

THANK YOU! This is exactly what i needed, problem solved. In case you lazy a hdd degausser will purge all data very quickly whilst still leaving the hdd intact for further use.
