Re: Urgent Message to Canadians
This time... it's personal
Digg this! A little over one year ago I came to you with an urgent message regarding Canadian copyright reform. I implored your assistance in an issue that would affect the digital way of life of all, Canadians and non-Canadians alike.

Through word of mouth, the efforts of the GBAtemp.net community, the Canadian Coalition for Electronic Rights, as well as Canadian citizens and internet users everywhere we were able to make a difference.

With no less than 50,000 topic views, 245 accumulative topic replies, nearly 2600 diggs, 365 digg discussions, and over 20,000 letter submissions via the CCER website which were then physically mailed to each minister. Over one-hundred thousand were sent in total. It is because of the monumental level of support given that we were able to accomplish that, allowing for the situation to be postponed and re-approached.

Your actions were in fact so impactful that the government of Canada has opened up the debate to the public; consumers and creators alike. They want to hear your opinions on the issues at hand so that the interests of all Canadians can be taken into account. However, public consultations are not usually done in the summer months, so speculation suggests that the government is trying to fast-track the bill with minimal resistance to make it law by Christmas of this year.

Until September 13, 2009, you can do your part by participating in the ongoing copyright consultations across the country by visiting www.copyrightconsultation.ca and registering for upcoming live townhall meetings and webcasts, or via e-mail submissions.

Additionally you can show your support on Twitter by using the #copycon tag or following copyrightcanada (http://twitter.com/copyrightcanada), and/or joining the Fair Copyright for Canada Facebook group. The CCER letter sending applet has also been altered to submit messages directly to the official government consultation website.

The more public submissions that are in support of not prohibiting circumvention devices and technologies that they receive, the less likely this legislation is to pass. Time is of the essence, we must act now.

As a consumer of digital media and electronics, Canadian or otherwise, you stand to be greatly impacted by changes to Canada's copyright regime. If we do not voice our concerns we run the risk of having a backwards and unnecessarily extreme system of copyright law imposed upon us. Imagine living in a country where corporations and US lobby groups dictate how you consume information, media and utilize technology.

This reality would make owning, purchasing or operating devices such as flashcarts, modchips, and so on entirely illegal; even in the context of homebrew applications for private use. Fine upstanding businesses such as Canadian GBAtemp affiliates KickGaming, ConsoleSource, and electrobee would be hurt as well by such legislation. Not only limiting them, but we the consumer as well.

Just want to say something. If you don't have one, go make a digg account and digg the article up. The digg effect has proved time after time that is does get the word a huge number of people. Also spread the word out to other gaming sites that share the same "yar" values as us.

[10:10:32] It seems so uninteresting
[10:10:54] it spreads the word to a huge amount of people if it's front paged
[10:10:59] and that is a very good thing
[10:11:31] do it for your country phill
[10:11:42] that and oreo cookies
[10:11:53] and whatever else Canadians stand for
[10:11:59] syrup and all that jazz

Bullshit nonsense from the government is all we'll get.

CRTC obviously don't care. I'm with TekSavvy, and they're one of the only ISPs to support Net Neutrality openly, and because of that I get a lot of updates. I have been listening to the CRTC hearing a few days back and it just shows that the CRTC are a bunch of dimwits who will believe anything Bell says about DPI (deep packet inspection) and the like. But when it comes to experts who know a lot more about this than even Bell does, the CRTC will spend days listening to them, but still believing the bullshit Bell and other telcos fed them.

Anyways, I hope something good comes out of this, but from my previous experience with the CRTC I doubt anything's going to happen.

Someone should send this information over to Leo Laport (or however you spell his last name), he has a show on CityTV that I have seen before, he is a former TechTV guy who left after G4 took over and canned the Call for Help show which always kept me in the loop about technology. Obviously these mod chip outlaws haven't gone through because sites like Kickgaming.ca which are based in Toronto are still operating and I can buy carts from wherever. The whole situation is just as much of a piss off as ISP's being allowed to track what you download and the police being able to monitor your connection as well so they can bust you despite the fact that they claimed it was to get rid of child porn when in fact we all know they will also go after pirates as well. The fact that American lobby groups are tried to push the law here is a joke, just like the MPAA though who I told to go fuck themselves with a cold frozen steel rod over their crackdown on guitar tablature, they have no authority here in Canada and should keep their dirty fucking noses out of our business.

I'm not sure what his stance is on copyright laws are though.

It bothers me that in Harper's attempt to appease the US, we have to go this far.

The laws they are thinking of bringing into place are too vague to be believable. For example, one of the laws prevents you from unlocking your own cell phone for use when you are in another country. Another states you aren't allowed to copy a music CD no more then three times to any of your devices so once to your PC, once to your iPod, and then you can do it once more.

How can they enforce these laws?

A lot of people hate him here, he has many of the same ideals as Bush did and some of his idioicies and hypocritical actions have made him the staple for insults among political comedy shows. I freaking get a kick out of the Liberal attack ads his party puts out all the time, they fucking fear elections so much yet it just proves that they are a bunch of bastards with the dumb attacks they put out against every Liberal leader, it has been their tactic for the last few years.

It was stupid in the first place to enforce this law. Even if it is enforced, I'm pretty sure many will still do it but it's just a stupid law to enforce. Not only will people continue resuming what they do, they'd also lose money enforcing things like this (I think..).

Go Canada.

There's more to it than simple law enforcement.

We're not necessarily talking about officers of the law bursting into your house in the middle of the night and raiding your supply of flashcarts. We're talking RIAA level restrictions on everything. Download an mp3? Pay a fine. Pirate a movie online? Pay a fine. In the range of $500 minimum. Imagine that. If you downloaded 50 mp3s, you could be paying $25,000 in one sitting. It takes very little to enforce government mandated ISP watch dogging and such.

Or as stated in the spoiler boxed area of my above post, KickGaming, ConsoleSource, electrobee. Three of GBAtemp's affiliates would in all likelihood be put out of business in the scenario that the laws as they are at the moment pass. It would be illegal to import or sell such devices. Imagine that. Not only would businesses be severely impacted, but as a Canadian citizen you wouldn't be able to purchase such a device from someone in another country. And of course, we are supported by those affiliates to GBAtemp would be affected adversely as well.

There's a domino effect at play with these laws. You think "So what, they'll never enforce it...", but it's not a difficult thing to legally force the Canadian internet service providers to monitor everything you download and fine you for it. And the ripples it would send through fine communities like ours would be greatly detrimental as well, perhaps fatal to some sites and businesses.

Damn that's hard... Pretty freaky... Tracking... Every... Single... Thing... You... Do.

I think I might either start downloading the games I've wanted O_O. Or better yet, just buy them if this happens.

I just hope we'll win... And they don't enforce this law. Thanks Ace for keeping us updated.

I don't have a Twitter, Facebook, or Digg account but will try to do what ever I can. And also, thanks for the help guys from people that aren't from Canada!

They'll assign a govenment agent to stay at your house and count how many times you copy your cd's so they can get you on the spot.

That's impossible to do that for every citizen, not enough agents.
