Hi,

I've read Arctic's very helpful guide to softmodding a PS2, and my Action Replay is on its' way so that I can start. I just have a few questions before I begin.

The PS2 will be used by a few people. To normal users, is there anything different to playing a normal game, or do you just put the burned disc in and the game starts like usual?

And just to double check before I order some blank discs, PS2 games are on CDs, not DVDs, right?

Many thanks.

Note some rare cases that PS2 games come on CD-R

i just tried to burn ICO the other day on a DVD which failed when I found out that it needs a CD

im sure there is a list somewhere, but again its really rare.

Why not use HDLoader or Open PS2 Loader?

If it's a fat you can use an internal drive and a slim can use a network.

If you're not interested, then yes you have to patch the ISO files with ESR before you burn then.

Oh boy...

Free McBoot is a hack that allows you to run homebrew directly from memory card or usb storage without the need for Action Replay or some exploit. ESR is the homebrew program that allows to run burned DVD games that are patched to be seen as video dvds(ESR disc patcher). You do not need to swap discs and it only works for dvd games. But there's some way to patch CD games to use DVDs, which i don't know much about, you need to look it up somewhere.

So usually Free McBoot is set to boot ESR automatically if a game disc is inserted, well i think it is, i usually turn such stuff off, i always want to be in control and tell the damn thing what to do and what not. Anyways, you can always set Free McBoot to show an ESR option in the ps2 main browser and when you start it, it boots your patched game discs.
