Okay, I have a Japanese 3DSLL/XL running sys 8.1.0, Emunand, and a Gateway cart for .3ds loading(double SD card space for games), and I would like to update to luma CFW with the Emunand I already have as the boot nand, while keeping my Sysnand and Emunand saves, while keeping Gateway mode support. I also have patched the MSET to run old ds carts (don't know if this will cause an issue).
I really want to keep gateway for the extra space.
From what I have gathered I have 2 options:
1: Boot -> Luma Emunand -> Gateway launcher -> Gateway mode in Luma Emunand?
2: Boot -> Luma Synand -> Gateway launcher -> Gateway mode in Luma Sysnand/boot into Emunand.
I do not know if method 1 will keep my Sysnand saves (Pokemon X Eshop, Mario Kart 7 cart, bravely default cart, super Mario land cart), and my Emunand saves (too many to name). I have not split the Emunand and Synand, so I don't see why they wouldn't all work on the Emunand right?
And method 2 should work perfectly fine, but its a little cumbersome.
So do I have things right? Will method 1 work as I think? or am I locked to using method 2? Or am I forgetting some very basic 3ds save compatibility info that requires me to export and reimport my saves at any stage? Will the MSET patch screw me over at any stage?
I understand that if I keep Gateway I will forever be tied down to 11.2 firmware on the Sysnand/Emunand running luma, but I'm aware that you can selectively patch parts of the firmware to keep post 11.2 game compatibility, like spoofing.
I also understand that the ability to run only .3ds games holds back the function of the Gateway mode SD cart space being as beneficial as possible, but with the price of flash memory right now I think it is worth it, and worth running a Frankenand, to get that extra space, and will continue to cross my fingers for a cart slot system SD card space expander in the future (however unlikely it is).
I also fully understand that all this drama for the system will be overshadowed by Citra in the coming years as PC's will have the power to play it perfectly, but I will probably keep the 3ds for its portability, just like I have kept my DS Lite for an eReader/music player/Ds game player/GBA player.
