R4 clones were made by greedy assholes.
They used to set a "time bomb" in the flashcards, so after a specific date they stopped working.
The idea was that users would then need to buy a new flashcard, so Yey! Profit!

Yeah one of my R4 cards has one of those but at leasts it works on my 3DS.
