New statistics show that the PlayStation 4 is one of the most popular game consoles of all time. According to Sony's recent financial results for the quarter, the PlayStation 4 has just reached a massive 102.80 million sales. This officially places the PS4 as the second highest-selling home video game console, dethroning both its progenitor, the original PlayStation, and Nintendo's massively popular Wii in one fell swoop. The only console that surpasses such high sales numbers is the PlayStation 2, which sold over 155 million units during its reign. If you factor handheld consoles into the equation, then the PS4 is only the fourth highest-selling, beaten out by the original Game Boy/Color line, and the Nintendo DS.

While attaining such a high amount of sales is impressive, it appears that as the PlayStation 4's lifespan comes to a close, sales are beginning to slowly decrease. Sony originally predicted that the console would sell 15 million units this fiscal year, but they've lowered their projections to a slightly smaller 13.5 million.

And it all started with games like wipeout resident evil and ff7 being released on ps1 the type of games tht were a new experience -these games stay in people's memories and are the kind of games tht people associate with playstation

I don't really partake in the console wars, per se, (I just play on what has the games and content I want) but I gotta say -- the PS4 is a great console. I have a launch model and it still holds up like a champ and I love it.
Honestly, although I'm ecstatic that the PS5 will be wholly backwards compatible, it kinda makes me sad since I won't have much of a reason to spin ol' reliable up when I wanna revisit a PS4 game.

Sony has for me, proven to be nothing but junk. Based on how many I've had to replace, i wouldn't be surprised if it was only 20 million people with a console having to repurchase replacements when the previous one dies. Considering the numerous videos showing how opening it up and applying liquid metal on the APU of the system drastically improved cooling, it's amazing they don't just all conveniently up and die the second a new model comes out.

Even more contentious is how sony is very much against right to repair, evident by how they seem to actively pursue and litigate anyone offering repair parts dor their systems, drying up supply when those parts are finally needed. As is i could buy the parts to (re)assemble a Nintendo switch from scratch, and still find parts for the original Xbox. But for any given PlayStation? Nope. All those suppliers and supplies dried up real fast.

I still don't like how the controller feels. Even with the atrocious triggers on the ps3 controller, it was still more usable than the hot mess that the ps4 one is.

I went from Xbox360 to PS4 controller.. the PS4 controller is perfect. After that I went to Xbox One Elite Controller.

4 ps1s, ps2s, psps all dead. I'm on my sixth ps3 and i just gave away my third and last psp go for a Pseudo Saturn, because i got tired of them breaking.

My made in 2006 360 elite is still running flawless. I also just revived another back into full operation. I've also since revived and restored four original Xbox systems.

I've had Nintendo systems break but most of the time I've been able to repair them fully as well.

It's also impossible not to recall how especially bad Sony's deal with Foxconn is, considering the company opted rather than to offer proper mental health and counseling services for their employees, to instead by some anti-suicide nets because so many literally wanted to die than make a single ps4 more.

And none of this factors in the pro model, and how most all the games i gave even half a care about actually ran worse on the upgraded model; all because Sony had to arbitrarily mandate that "games can't run better than on the vanilla model".

It's like I'm watching lemmings jumping to their death. Or the amount of people that literally buy a brand new iphone every year, to the day.

tbf the PS4 failure rates probably count for at least 20% of that total, at one point i was getting 40+ broken consoles in per week, only to be surpassed in failure rate by the xbox 360

PS2 was pretty reliable, so couldn't argue with those sales totals...well except lots of people bought it simply as a cheap DVD player

It would be neat if we got separate sales numbers of the original and pro units.
(Unless they're already in the source and I somehow missed it)
