I want to hook my Raspberry Pi to my laptop. As the laptop doesn't have HDMI input, just output, could I buy a HDMI to VGA adapter and hook it to the VGA port? Thanks everybody.

Usually using your laptop as an external monitor consists of taking apart your laptop and removing your LCD screen then buying various parts and controllers to achieve a stand alone LCD monitor. The HDMI and VGA are most likely HDMI-Out or VGA-Out but I have heard of ways to buy software that allows multiple displays via network but I doubt it will work with Raspberry Pi.

Just stop being cheap and buy a little display for your Pi...

I would, but it's for my dad to use at work. He can't be lugging around a monitor everywhere he goes. It's loaded with retropie so he can play games with his friends in his downtime. He's hooking it to his laptop because there's no TV available.

Nope, not possible. The VGA port is output only as well.

Errr, maybe a self-booting DVD with a Linux distro and some emulators on it would make more sense?
Thanks for the answer. My dad's not too great with technology so I made the raspberry pi plug and play and it looks really nice. I showed him some regular windows emulators and he didn't get it too well. Maybe I'll buy one of those tablet shell things and he can use it like that.

Is he connecting it via network? I know there are plenty of displays out there that are definitely mobile... If he has a laptop why isn't he just setting up emulation station on it instead of the Pi?

I never thought of that. I always just thought emulation station was just a fancy name. I'm gonna look into that. Thanks!

In case someone doesn't know, here is how monitors work.

Devices have output ports, let's call it port A
Monitor have input ports, Let's call it port B

You plug stuff in from port A to Port B. Output, sends image/video information for input to receive. That is how it works, changing it requires some expert technical skill to actually modify said devices to do such things. Laptop only has one input and is the system itself, but as someone already said, you can use a capture card like Elgato gaming HD, or Avermedia, those are also inputs but also outputs at the same time. So that is a option, of course is not the best. Using tools like that, it has delay on PC cause it actually process videos on the fly to display on the computer.
