Hacking Question Was there once a possible program to restore an earlier firmware without a backup?

I thought I recalled seeing something around a year ago that could restore the default shipping firmware of a switch, even without having a nand backup of that version (was only for low firmware).

Say your Switch shipped on 1.0 and you updated to 3.0 - you could restore back to that stock 1.0 version.

Call me crazy, but I could swear I remember a bigger name dev even looking for a Switch in that kind of situation. Probably just got mixed in with all the fake news of the time - yeah?

You can flash older firmwares with ChoiDujour but it won't boot if the efuse count isn't correct for that firmware. If you're on firmware 3.0.0 you should still be in pretty good shape and don't lose much at the moment compared to 1.0 in terms of future possibilities. It would be a good idea to perform a NAND backup now if you want to update to newer firmwares without burning efuses using ChoiDujour (and AutoRCM), granted Atmosphere has some emuNAND support now (haven't tried it myself yet) and fusee gelee is still often preferred since there isn't any persistent software cold boot exploit for any firmware at this time as far as I'm aware. Keep in mind if you upgrade firmware using ChoiDujour you would need to push a payload using RCM everytime which probably isn't necessary for you right now at 3.0.0. Using emuNAND may be a better solution if you want to stick with a warm-boot software solution and utilize features and software from newer firmwares. Others would know more about the current state of emuNAND than I do.

Thank you - I'm aware of CD and such, I just couldn't recall this specific instance being real or not. I only thought of it as I was going through one of my OG machines and checking the serial number.

Someone was asking for files from people who had a switch that had since been upgraded, but shipped with 1.0

I think there might be a way to bypass the fuse check maybe with lower firmware but not without some kind of patch. It'd still require some CFW payload and wouldn't be persistent, even with a 1.0 NAND backup if any fuses were blown. It'd be nice to see something big for 1.0 or 3.0, but at this point who knows if it'll happen and it wouldn't gain much at this point just some added convenience compared to fusee gelee. If there's a way to downgrade back to 1.0 and bypass fuses automatically that'd be cool though.
