I'm planning to buy a BlueRay-Player. Then I was thinking why not pay a bit more and buy a PS3. But I have some questions:

1. Is there currently a way to run PS2 backups on a PS3 (I don't mean PS3-Isos!)?
2. Which models don't play PS2 games at all? Does the Slim play them?
3. What do recommend, PS3 or PS3 Slim? What are the advantages / disadvantages over each other?
4. In general, is online gaming free?

Thanks

1. Here. It does involve opening your PS3 though.
2. Only the fat 60GB model has full PS2 compatibility.
3. The 60GB model is the best, it has all the features from every other model, and if you need more storage the hard drive is upgradeable.
4. Online gaming is free!

Hope this helps!

1. There was a way to play PS2 backups by physically modding the disc drive and adding a manual eject switch. You then would use a swap method. Not sure if it still works and also it potentially ruin your PS3.

2. The only 80GB model that plays PS2 games almost 100% are model CECHE01(I think the last batch of those were MGS4 models). The old 20/60GB also play PS2 games. All of them have almost 100% PS2 compatibility( I think except for the newer 80GB that came after the MGS4 bundles). The slim cannot play any PS2 games.

3. I'd only recommend the phat PS3 if they have PS2 compatibility...the phats can also install Linux. Slims just consume less power and are smaller.

4. It's free.

With the 1st gen (i think 60GB only US and Japan) and Swap Magic(but without swapping!) you can play ps2 games from usb with Open PS2 Loader. Network support is also worked on, but don't count on it.

Yeah, you should go for either Yellow Dog Linux or PSubuntu (I would pick PSubuntu, but sadly I have the slim...

), which are made specifically for the PS3's cell CPU. These will allow you to use emulators, etc. or run video encoding programs which use the powerful CPU. Bear in mind these don't allow access to the RSX graphics processor, so 3D games, etc. won't run well.

Yes, but .mkv will not play and I'm sure a few other formats. Avi (divx), mp4 play fine. When you highlight the usb drive in video in the PS3 menu, you have to press triangle to tell it to "display all" to get it to list your movie files though. It's a bit annoying but nothing major.

How are the DVD playing capabilities? Does the PS3 support upscaling?

And can you insert a DVD-R with divx movies and play them?

As far as i know the ps3 is one of the best upscalers available for dvds. But can't say anything if it reads DVD-Rs or not.

Yeah, you can put movies onto the hard-drive. You'll have to do the ripping on the computer though.

Everytime I put my HDD USB drive into the PS3 and try to load a movie, it won't even recognize any movies as on the HDD.

I have them buried in a folder, but doesn't the PS3 read folders?
And they are the right format.

I click video and it says no movies found.

edit: I just figured out you have to press TRIANGLE on "Video" to browse the entire drive.

sometimes it reads folder like backing up saves it makes a ps3 folder but for movies click triangle for options and there should be a browse or something simmilar option
