WiiMC not reading DVD movies anymore...

My Wii is a 2006 Launch Wii. All original parts, and Softmodded obviously, running WiiMC 1.34, the latest version. My DVD playback has always seemed hit or miss, but now it's not wanting to read ANY DVDs, it just shows this error instead of loading my disc:

Does this mean I need to replace my disc drive? I don't mind if I do, I just think these first-gen Wii drives are probably rare by now, and hella expensive if I go that route... Unless anyone knows of a compatible USB DVD Drive mod... Help?

correct me if im wrong, but i thought you could place dvd movies on hdd too, to play them with WiiMC?

that would sove the problem right? :P

the problem with that is that it takes time to rip movies to hdd and he wants his wii as a dvd player.

does the wii still take game disks? if it does, i would say, try using one of those lense cleaning disks first, it might just be dust. otherwise, chances are high the laser isnt calibrated right anymore, at which point you'll probably need to replace the drive / the console
and yes, I'd gather that those old drives might get rare now

I don't have any DVD games anymore, I ripped them all to the harddrive and then sold them like a dirty pirate bastard. I don't even know the drive model I need to look for. :/ It reads gamecube games, DVDs, originals and burned. I need a replacement that can do the same, or my burned Gamecube collection will be worthless.

I would just buy a cheap dvd player you can pick one up for alot cheaper than the drive would cost and it also would play everything you throw at it cause it's the sole purpose of the device

I have the old wii at home because it works and run without a problem. I think you can use on external dvd on any (with old and new drive) wii and wii u system instead run on new internal disc drive. On wii u, you probably don't have to install the cios 202 because they remove.

Wii's can only output video at 480p so some DVD's won't work. Rip the DVD so that the movie is in avi format, and load it from your HDD. Xilisoft video converter works great.
