Hi everyone, today I bought a used xbox 360 fat from a guy outside Gamestop...

He was trying to get store credit for it, and they only offered $25 even though it had all the cables, 20gb hard drive, controller and headset. I told him I'd give him the $40 I had on my pocket and he was happy.

It obviously wasn't working even though he said it was, it wouldn't even turn on to see if it had the RROD, but after some fiddling I found out that one usb port was busted in and it was short circuiting the power unit. I fixed myself and now it's working.

Previously I had only played on my friend's 360, since I'm mostly a Nintendo gamer, so I'm clueless as to what to do now.

Since I don't plan to pay for live and the wifi adapter, I guess I'll use it for media playback from my hard drive and get some good split screen games for my friends.

Can anyone give me advice on what to do? I'm used to modding the Wii and DS, I'd like to be pointed in the right direction in terms of games, Jtag, RGH, homebrew and the like.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post :S

What's the dashboard version? Basically there's two options. Flash, or JTAG/RGH. You can flash your DVD drive and allows you to play games from burned DVDs and only retail games, no DLC stuff and no homebrew. It requires a PC with a SATA chipset and depending on your drive some hardware. JTAG/RGH lets you do everything but no online and it requires some hardware and soldering too. You can flash on any dashboard, JTAG is limited to 7371 or under, RGH1 14699, RGH2 14719, and R-JTAG works on any dashboard. JTAG is the easiest, RGH1 is slightly harder but glitch boot times are good, RGH2 has slower boot times and isn't compatible with some motherboards, and R-JTAG is the most expensive. For flashing, you can burn games on dual layer DVDs. Contrary to what you heard having a certain burner isn't required, the only drawbacks of not having one are XGD3 games can't be installed to the HDD, and certain XGD3 games just won't work, but this list is very small, I could give you specific games if you choose to flash. As for media options, they're better if you have the media updates, they can only be downloaded if you go online. If you choose to JTAG or RGH you can get them without using online. Hope this gives you an idea of what your options are.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I think I'm going to get the RGH since it's very cheap in my country, and play games from my external hard drive, assuming I can use the same one as on my Wii. And use the internal 20GB for the saves or whatever else is needed.

And according to this page http://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-how-to-hack-your-360.334203/ I have a jasper MB and the NXE dashboard.

I just tried playing a video off my hard drive, it only recognized the first partition, and told me a "media update is required to play this content". Since I can't go online (And don't ever plan to) are there good media players? I think I will finally get free of my WiiMC shackles and play my videos in HD on my TV :P

Don't update your 360 past 14699 (last RGH1 dashboard) or you'll need to get it R-JTAGged.

You can swap out the 20 GB HDD with a 2TB (max) internal HDD, SATA 2.5 inch and store everything on that.
USB is slow and makes FSD slow with loading everything ;/

As for a good Mediaplayer...
XMPlayer I guess...
I didn't try it that much tho.

Anyway if you got it RGH'd, you'll need to update your NAND before you update your dashboard.
You can find that here.
Installing FSD can be found here.

Some videos will play without the optional media update, some won't, and of course, some won't play even with it. I don't know how you'd get it on there without connecting to Live, which will force you to update your dash, which you really don't want to do if you plan to JTAG/RGH.

360 isn't realy that great as a mediaplayer at all.
Even with homebrew it's so-so.
But yeh the only way to fully unlock the potential of the 360 is with RGHing it.
