Games will work fine but general consensus is that the present hacked firmwares (all drives) can be detected (something previously not thought possible) you need not be on live for the detection to work either so flashing it now and then waiting some months to go on live (at which point you will have updated to the new firmware) may not be the best method either.

The upcoming LT firmware is set to change this but as mentioned it is not released and we have no ETA on it either.

If live is not something you care for though have at it.

Only the 74850C needs the extra hardware and even then, it's just to get the key, which you can't avoid. Even if you want to change drive, key needs to be extracted from the original drive anyway.

If it's a new box it won't have a 74850C lite-on in it anyway, they haven't been around for ages now, it'll will probably have either a 83850 v2 or 93450 which don't need extra hardware, but you do need to cut tracks or lift pins and solder to get the key.

The newer the Xbox, the harder it is to get the drive key off it (usually). Round cat goes around.

Spoofing will require the drive key no matter what. By the point that you actually obtain the drive key, you're only 1 step away from flashing it, so you might aswell - it's much faster than actually spoofing another drive.

If it is a new 360 made this side of mid 2008 it is going to be a liteon. There is no way to tell what model/revision of liteon it is without pulling it apart and looking at the label (even then the last 3 models 8, 8v2 and 9 are "interesting"- 8 and 8v2 depend on the manufacturing date of the 360 and 9 series are often rebadged 8 series and I even heard stickers can be put over 8 series stuff).

As you asked though:

There is also tray type method but benq and liteon are the same other than the wires thing from the picture above:

Depends what revision liteon it is.

74850c not too hard to flash, just requires extra hardware. 83850 v1, nice and easy, all software. 83850 v2 or 93450, have to bring out the soldering iron and start cutting tracks.
