Xbox Game Pass is coming to PC, Microsoft also bringing 20+ of their first party titles to Steam

Microsoft has made a pretty major reveal, prior to its E3 briefing. The company will be bringing its Xbox Game Pass service to PC, with over 100 available titles to play at launch. Developers and publishers such as Deep Silver, Bethesda, SEGA, Paradox, and more will be partnering up with Microsoft to allow their games to be played by PC players with an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Just like with the console version of the subscription service, first-party Microsoft titles will be playable on launch, which includes content from the newly acquired inXile and Obsidian Entertainment. Those that enjoy using the Microsoft Store will be able to make use of the service's 20% off Windows game purchases that are offered in the Xbox Game Pass library.

In an effort to give players more choice, Microsoft will also be bringing over 20 of its first-party games to the PC gaming storefront, Steam. Gears of War 5, Age of Empires, and over 20 more titles will be brought to Steam, following the release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC.

More information is slated for Xbox's E3 press conference, so we'll find out specific details and pricing in just a few weeks.

Two years ago, we launched Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One, and since then we’ve seen how valuable a curated library of high-quality games can be for players and game developers alike. It offers a great way to discover and play your next favorite game. We researched whether a similar opportunity exists for PC players and PC game developers, and we believe that it does. We also considered the importance of bringing something new and additive to the PC gaming ecosystem, and we believe that we can. So, we designed a service specifically for the needs of PC gamers and PC game developers. It’s called Xbox Game Pass, just like the original, but it’s a new experience that we are building together with the PC community.

Xbox Game Pass for PC will give players unlimited access to a curated library of over 100 high-quality PC games on Windows 10, from well-known PC game developers and publishers such as Bethesda, Deep Silver, Devolver Digital, Paradox Interactive, SEGA, and more. And just as we committed on the console, it is our intent to include new games from Xbox Game Studios in Xbox Game Pass for PC the same day as their global release, including titles from newly acquired studios like Obsidian and inXile. We’re working with over 75 developers and publishers to bring PC content to the service and we’ll ensure the library remains curated and full of great PC titles across a variety of genres, with new games added every month.

Xbox Game Pass for PC members will also receive discounts in the Microsoft Store on Windows of up to 20% on games currently in the library and up to 10% off related game DLC and add-ons.

We look forward to sharing more at E3, including the great games coming to the library, as well as more details on when and how you’ll experience the new Xbox Game Pass service for PC gamers.

Age of empires on pc? Heh... To my own surprise, this really isn't currently available on Steam yet. :P

(yes, I know : this is the definitive edition. Still... It's a pretty weird thing to see)

So they're basically giving up on Xbox at this point. Wonder what the point of the next xbox will be at this point...
Steam integration, perhaps?

Like I've been saying since the launch of current gen consoles, Microsoft has no business in the console market anymore. Xbox is going to share it's entire library with PC. Exclusives sell consoles.

Well, PC-only would fail to get them enough sales as well as console-only does. Why ditch any of those if the other doesn't guarantee enough income by itself?

Because there is probably little to absolutely no profit margin on the XB1. I'm pretty sure they're just taking some substantial losses at this point and if the next gen goes the same way (which I'm quite certain it will)... then what's the point? With GamePass coming to PC and their other big titles coming to Steam - there's zero reason to also be manufacturing consoles at a loss. All of the XB1 people would simply switch over to PC, which in turn would result in no losses on consoles, yet still getting all the gains through Windows.

Was just reading about this, I'm glad they're bringing stuff to Steam so you're not stuck with shitty Windows Store exclusivity. I might consider getting Game Pass for PC if the price is right, like say $5 a month or something, but I'm sure it probably won't be.
Every 2 weeks you can get it for a $1 for a month. I just 3 months for a $1 too.

Wasn't GamePass already on PC?
Yeah for some. If you have a gp sub,you can used it for some games already. However I know it's not the same as Xbox like gears 4 isn't included on PC but sea of thieves is.

Seems interesting. Probably won't be able to use this though, since I completely disabled UWP apps and the Microsoft Store on my PC, as well as the automated updates.

Now this is what I'm talking about! Giving the consumer more choices is a big win in my book. All they really have to do is get the price right.
all they are doing is ruining the xbox console, i mean if there are zero exclusive xbox games why own one? you can just own a ps5 and a pc and be set for 99% of the games just missing nintendo exclusives, they just make the next xbox an even bigger failure saleswise since there is no need to own it anymore.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Microsoft is probably the only company that supports the PC market as much as the console market. I love their approach to things recently.
they make both pcs and consoles OS lol.

@pedro702 I disagree, in fact this strengthens the brand. They are creating a play anywhere experience which they are betting their money on being the future. Not everyone has the money/tech skills needed to build a high end gaming PC so those people can either A. use their existing PCs and play on a lower setting or B. play on an xbox.

you do know xbox one is like 1/3 of ps4 sales right? so no they need to make it worth it, and they are doing everything but that, everyone bought a ps4 becuase xbox had almost no exclsuives so the way they are making it out to be next gen it will be zero exclusives.

They already revealed they are gonna work on a streaming service, so the moment you can stream the 3 or 4 xbox exclusive games on a potato Pc the xbox is worthless really.

like i said if you dont like gaming pcs just get a ps5 becuase xbox wont have any exclusives so no need to own one, this is how this gen ended up this way really and next gen with streaming services just keeps making xbox more and more useless.

@pedro702 MS is not overly worried about their hardware sales as their focus seems to be more on the service of Xbox in itself (Xbox game pass, Xbox live etc.) Yeah everyone got a PS4 for those reasons on that I will agree but will that last another gen or 2? Cloud gaming and gaming as a service is going to be a real thing in less then 10 years and I think MS and building the bedrock of that now.

So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
