Yuzo Koshiro, Streets of Rage composer, announces a brand new Sega Genesis game

dsadasdasdasdas.png

One of the most influential video game composers is working on a new game, for an old console. Yuzo Koshiro, known for his contributions to the soundtracks of Streets of Rage, ActRaiser, Shenmue, and many more, is returning to the Genesis/Mega Drive era for a shmup game that will be releasing on the console, more than 30 years after the system's debut. Koshiro teased two screenshots of a 16-bit game, explaining that he's working on a shoot-em-up project that harkens back to the 80s, as both composer and designer. The Genesis's YM2612 soundchip will be used in making the soundtrack. There's no name for the game, nor even a working title, but it's being developed by Ancient Corp.--Koshiro's own company.

There are people out there who do still enjoy playing on old consoles, not just the collectors who leave them on a shelf for thousands of years.
I agree with that, but the amount of people who still own those consoles after 30+ years, is very low compare to the days where those consoles sold well. If they had opportunity to play it on a real console, sure they will. But not if it isn't continent. Those "Collectors" or retro gamers will benefit the most from stuff like these. But would be much easier to just have it on a modern console or steam where it's easily accessible. :ninja:

I know devs to this for their own satisfcation and not at all for profit, but I feel like it's a gigantic waste of time and talent to develop for obsolete hardware.

But if they're having fun, good for them.
I can see why that is. But who knows, if people want to keep putting the stuff out, and people buying it, then that's fine. It is a shame though, I'm sure these kinds of games are very limited and not mass produced. (Kinda like limited run situation where only people who pre-order gets the game, not put on store shelf)

Considering Sega just released a genesis mini 2 with newly produced games for it included, that's much better since they supply the system to play it on (even if it is emulation). Compared to just releasing cartridge for it and people who don't own the system can't even play it. Much more accessible. (Even better on modern systems)

Well, being accostumed to the SNES sound chip, everything the Mega Drive produced sounded like farting and burping sounds, intermixed with sounds of bowel movements.

The only soundtrack I can truly say I enjoy is Sonic. I can't really hear anything special on Streets of Rage that even the NES couldn't match (give Jurassic Park for the NES a listen).

But either way, I must say I'm intrigued by this announcement, as I wasn't expecting that a bona fide developer would produce and release something for a dead system. Homebrewers, yes.

I would Love to know if Sega is aware of this.

For some reason I thought this was a death announcement
Same here. My heart skipped a bit for a second.

I love Yuzo Koshiro's work. SoR is my night-driving music, has been for many years.
Some collaboration with Motohiro Kawashima would be great, like in the good old days.
