A peek behind the scenes of 20 years of GBAtemp

To celebrate our 20 years I thought it would be fun to dig through my archive files and share with you all some "behind the scenes" peeks at GBAtemp.

A lot goes on behind the scenes - more than we could possibly share but here's a handful of relics from years past.

Let me know if you find these interesting! :)

2003

Here's a screenshot of GBAtemp in 2003. This is the second iteration of the site and the first forum based one. Before this was the simple blog-style/guestbook type site that unfortunately we have no screenshots of.

2006 - 2007

In 2006 we sported a brand new design which was very different from anything before. It took the aesthetics from the new Nintendo DS Lite as inspiration and was designed by GBAtemp member AshuraZero.

Here's some mockups of a work in progress redesign for GBAtemp v3 circa 2005/2006. This was to be the first "major" redesign of GBAtemp moving on from the styles shown in the years above. I worked with @JeX- to design these. Check out the insane design - "it was the style at the time!". This style would come to be used later on in 2007 for GBAtemp v3.

2009

Here's a mockup for a major site redesign that never happened. It would later become inspiration for GBAtemp v6 years down the road.

GBAtemp's sister site - FileTrip

Unfortunately it's no longer around, but here's a look at FileTrip through the years.

GBAtemp's sister site - ShopTemp

Did you know for a few years we ran a sister/partner shop affiliated with GBAtemp - ShopTemp? Although we did pretty well with the site, for obvious reasons we were forced to stop selling flash carts and after this the site became a price comparison website before closing doors permanently a few years after that.

Here are some early mockups for what would be become ShopTemp:

And here's a screenshot of the store in its glory days.

GBAtemp Supercard DSTWO limited edition

In 2010 we partnered with the Supercard team to produce a limited edition GBAtemp themed Supercard DSTWO. Here are some promotional shots of the DSTWO:

Here's a high-res copy of the sleeve for production. Notice any GBAtemp references?

2017

In 2017 we launched GBAtemp v6 with a brand new style focused on mobile browsing which prior versions of the sites neglected.

Here's a mockup of GBAtemp v6.

Misc things

Sometimes we had a placeholder image before screenshots were available for ROMs when posting the release news. We often had fun placeholders to use. Here's one below that I found made by me. There was a non-Metroid themed one but I can't find it anymore.

I've always been into animation. Here are some of my animated avatars and signatures from the past (yes we did allow animated ones once upon a time!).

Here's some very rough and quick looking mockups for a potential portal redesign, from around 2005 and meant as a guide for GBAtemp v2.

In 2018 we sent all GBAtemp staff some gifts for Christmas. Here's a look at a couple of them including a poster and a mug!

Here's a pic of me and Costello during our American road trip circa 2008

We met a ton of other tempers including SpikeyNDS, Mikki, mthrnite, Urza and others!

Well that was fun! Let me know if you enjoyed reading this. :)

Wow, I pictured Costello a lot more hairy than that

Nice throwback!
I was a lurker in 2012, signed up in 2016, bothered Dinoh to the point I asked him to get me banned after feeling depressed, he did banned me!
Then signed up again but stupid me forgot my password, so I made another account (this one) years later.

I stayed because EOF is a fun place to be, met couple funnyheads that now I've got very used to read about every single day of the year.

This community is amazing.
The diversity and differences of every Temper is something rarely seen these days... and it's welcomed and quite frankly, celebrated. :toot:

Very nice stuff :D
The GBAtemp supercard kind of surprised me, didn't know it was a thing, looks like a really nice thing to have and use.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

  • Veho @ Veho:
    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

  • Veho @ Veho:
Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite
    for people with beefy hands.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    but that's a long shot
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think only the red mario kart edition phat was v5
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

    lmao
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
