Animated pick of the week #1: FLCL

This will be the first in a series of videos I do on select animated series from around the world that I feel deserve a bit more attention than they got. If you want to, watch the series and then come here to discuss. So without further ado, I present, FLCL.

As you can tell from this short clip, this series is incredibly fucked up. The story is about a kid named Naota who has an average boring life. That is, until a woman named Haruko swoops in on her Vespa and runs him over, nearly killing him in the process. After proceeding to freak out she killed Taro-kun (Whoever that is) she smashes Naota's head with her guitar, and from there things go berserk. Unlike a lot of anime, this series has nearly no semblance of a plot with most of the charm coming from the characters themselves and the situations they get into. It isn't very long either, only a short 6 episodes, but it is such a sweet ride. Each episode seems to out-crazy the last, and you'll wish for even more episodes after you're done. Luckily though, this series is highly rewarding to repeat viewings. You'll catch on to things you first didn't, and it really makes you appreciate the insane amount of detail they put into making this series stand out from the crowd. This series also has a nice musical score by the Japanese band "The Pillows" who do a great job of adding to the atmosphere of show. If you're a dub watcher, then this series is even better. The translation is absolutely flawless (Save for one scene in episode 5) and the voice acting is superb. This is one series you don't want to miss.

I think it's a good but overrated show. I don't think it deserves the amount of praise it gets, though it is a pretty good show. The Pillows do add to it, it would feel like a completely different show without them.

Well, I find the show gets a good amount of love and hate, so I figured I'd spread the word about it. I almost never see any discussions about it anywhere, and most anime watchers I ask have never even heard of it. I only started with this series because it's a particular favorite of mine.

People still talk about Dragon Ball, so I see no reason why we can't talk about this. If you don't want to talk about it, then by all means don't.

I respect the fact that you don't like it, but please try to keep your posts constructive and mature instead of saying things like "you can't swing a penis through any given gaming forum without hitting at least 500 weeaboos who rave about it." Feel free to dislike it and tell us why, but if you're going to be indecent and immature about it then you can complain somewhere else.

Overrated? Not when you compare it to shows that are actually overrated: naruto, bleach, inuyasha, tsubasa, soul eater, lucky star, etc. Just because other people like something that you don't like as much as them doesn't mean it's overrated. It's a great show that doesn't even get close to the attention of some of the shows I listed.

I'm not really complaining I'm just giving a valid example of a show that is a lot more overrated than FLCL. You seem like the type of person that would avoid something if it's popular just because it's popular. You probably say you're a "nonconformist" without realizing you're just conforming to "nonconformist" ideas.

Not really, it's apart of The Big 3 (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece), all three of which are overrated. Remember, overrated =/= bad.

One thing I like about this series is that there's quite a bit of context you can find when you look deeper into some of the episodes. I remember my first time going through thinking that everything was just sort of stupid random (Which I like to an extent anyway) but there really is a surprising amount of depth to be found when you dig deeper. It's still a crazy weird series overall though.

Well the context isn't really meant to be subtle, but it was buried by the anime's randomness that wasn't in the manga.

It's for a different type of fan. It came out first, but it was a lot darker than the anime. I'm not going to say it's better, but I can see alot of people liking the manga and not the anime and vice versa.

I don't really see the antics of this show to be "random," at least not in the sense I think of when I hear that word in the context it has been used. I mean, they're random in the sense that they occur at random times, but the stuff in this show was actually though out with the the intention of being funny (and I certainly find it to be so). It's not like the stupid bullshit that people say off the top of their head and others laugh at because it's "random."

iirc the manga was made after the anime

edit: yeah
anime original run: April 26, 2000 – March 16, 2001
manga original run: October 23, 2000 – August 23, 2001
dates are from wikipedia, but I confirmed that the manga was made after the anime from some more "reliable" sources that didn't specify dates
