Animated pick of the week #1: FLCL

This will be the first in a series of videos I do on select animated series from around the world that I feel deserve a bit more attention than they got. If you want to, watch the series and then come here to discuss. So without further ado, I present, FLCL.

English title: FLCL
Foreign title: フリクリ (Furi Kuri)
Episodes: 6
Genre: Science fiction, surreal comedy
Director: Kazuya Tsurumaki
Writer: Yōji Enokido
Rating: R

As you can tell from this short clip, this series is incredibly fucked up. The story is about a kid named Naota who has an average boring life. That is, until a woman named Haruko swoops in on her Vespa and runs him over, nearly killing him in the process. After proceeding to freak out she killed Taro-kun (Whoever that is) she smashes Naota's head with her guitar, and from there things go berserk. Unlike a lot of anime, this series has nearly no semblance of a plot with most of the charm coming from the characters themselves and the situations they get into. It isn't very long either, only a short 6 episodes, but it is such a sweet ride. Each episode seems to out-crazy the last, and you'll wish for even more episodes after you're done. Luckily though, this series is highly rewarding to repeat viewings. You'll catch on to things you first didn't, and it really makes you appreciate the insane amount of detail they put into making this series stand out from the crowd. This series also has a nice musical score by the Japanese band "The Pillows" who do a great job of adding to the atmosphere of show. If you're a dub watcher, then this series is even better. The translation is absolutely flawless (Save for one scene in episode 5) and the voice acting is superb. This is one series you don't want to miss.
I don't really see the antics of this show to be "random," at least not in the sense I think of when I hear that word in the context it has been used. I mean, they're random in the sense that they occur at random times, but the stuff in this show was actually though out with the the intention of being funny (and I certainly find it to be so). It's not like the stupid bullshit that people say off the top of their head and others laugh at because it's "random."
Well the context isn't really meant to be subtle, but it was buried by the anime's randomness that wasn't in the manga.
iirc the manga was made after the anime

edit: yeah
anime original run: April 26, 2000 – March 16, 2001
manga original run: October 23, 2000 – August 23, 2001
dates are from wikipedia, but I confirmed that the manga was made after the anime from some more "reliable" sources that didn't specify dates

Oh, duh. It's an OVA, whoops. Either way, what I said still stands. The anime does still bury the context while in the manga is exhibited in a rather...more forward and at times gruesome manner.

Maybe you should do Kara no Kyoukai, its an amazing movie series based of Nasu Kinoko's novels of the same name. As far as i have seen, not many people know of it.
Note that the 3rd movie has a literal [censored] scene though D: (Shows the upper part.)

for me it's good. it was funny, and there were surprises, and a lot happened in just 6 eps.

but it won't be on my favorites

My first AND ONLY I anime I liked. Not a big anime person, but this is... I don't know how to describe it, I wish there was a season 2.
I loved this show when I was a kid.

OVA's usually don't have sequels, but the one's that do are usually extensions of an actual series.

Still, its something to keep coming back for, because, in that time it just gives you a nostalgic feeling.

I can't really see a sequel being that good. Not because FLCL was bad, but rather because I can't really see a continuation as being needed, it seems more like it would be forced if they were to make one.

FLCL was amazing. It's classic "GAINAX encrypted bullshit". ^_^

By that I mean... the metaphors, life lessons, symbolism... everything in the show represented something more meaningful. It was a coming of age love story with heartbreak, confusion, and GIANT ROBOTS!

I remember watching it so long ago and falling in love with it. It was different than most anime; and the pillows (DO NOT capitalize it the proper way to do their name is lowercase :P) set a mood I couldn't get from any other anime, even to this day. I still listen to the pillows just about every other day, and I am happy that FLCL introduced me to them (they are now one of my favorite bands).

I hope GAINAX continues to deliver amazing shows as they always have.

@ Machomuu: I agree completely. They have SPECIFICALLY even said that that is the case in an interview. They don't want to "tack on" more to the story when it's great how it ended already.

Besides; it was just a OAV... they only did it as a small side project between shows to enhance their skills and for fun. They never wrote any extra for a continued story, nor did they ever plan to make one to begin with. I am MORE than happy to just rewatch it instead of watching a shitty, half-baked, forced sequel.

I remember that all my friends thought it was funny and I decided to just download it one day and watch it.

It wasn't terrible and it was REALLY FUCKING WEIRD but it didn't keep my interested. It was a little too random for my tastes. I'm pretty particular about anime though, I don't watch a lot and the only ones I found that were good were like Darker Than Black, TTGL (obviously), Code Geass (outside of some stupid "trying to be emo" parts), and Elfen Lied.

I really liked FLCL, not because it was popular. I just liked it, no really deep reason behind that.

Ah, FLCL. I love Gainax, mostly because I showed this series to all of my friends and got the same "WTF???" out of all of them. It was HILARIOUS.

From what I've read and seen, most people seem to dislike it because of the randomness, which makes sense really. The random weird shit is actually what I enjoyed the most about it. It was so bizarre it kept my attention.
