The reason why I believe the homebrew scene is dead and not coming back

After being out of the forum for quite a while for personal reasons, things have really changed around here.

Like expected, new exploits would appear, and this time, it was a massive one. But here's the catch: kernel access. Oh boy, that's why smea was trying to avoid it. Everybody went crazy, after downgrade utilities were released. But why downgrade? Will it make your system better? Will you have access to the Nintendo Network service? Nah, it's for one simple reason that everybody refuses to talk around here: piracy.

No, "backups" won't make you more legit, since it's still illegal to have a backup of a non-destructive media format and with copy protection (CDs, cartridges, etc), by some worldwide laws (check here). Also, you're just a little liar saying that you want to have copies of the games you "own". To say the truth, nobody really cares about homebrew. It's all about having free games and emulators at any time, anywhere, and people saw homebrew as a kind of a temporary solution for this.

Proof? Look at this forum. Less than one third of the topics from the first page are related to homebrew (excluding emulators, ugh), and most other topics aren't even supposed to be here. That's why I (and of what I saw, many other developers) gave up entirely on the scene for the system, and moved on into something better. And for me, it's really not coming back, since everybody will be satisfied with their free games and not caring anymore for new, unique and different projects.

Just my rant about the current situation. Please don't delete my topic or hunt me with pitchforks.

I thought it was probably because no one wants to make any emulators or anything like that since retroarch is around so everyone just relies on that instead. See what you mean though with actual homebrew.

Dead would be not having a means to compile and write homebrew. Every merge to CRTULIB proves contrary to your belief.

I have to say truly that I'm not using it only for piracy. I mean, look what other guys to create homebrew games. It is very very nice and I like them too. That minecraft clone is a great project. The same as the game 'Hax0r'. Im the one, who plays homebrew game when I'm like above 9.2 :)

From the more taxed people on the world, the brazilian, the place where a game is about 70% taxes saying something like this...Impressive.

Omg a few thousand people out of everyone on the entire planet are getting free games! Won't someone please think of Nintendo!?

E ae cara! :D
well I'm here for region free , undubs and translation XD (also mods/hacks ), more tham homebrews (actually I want some like video player, manga/comic readers , custom themes...) ...
I by myself don't think of piracy or " YEAH FRII GEMUS" or worse, the " I can sell modded consoles!!"...
I like the idea people can learn and do it themselves (or get someone nice that know do for then, but not profit from it! argh I would mod my friends' consoles for free... I actually did a wii for a friend when I had the chance.

I get a giggle from this sort of thing when I look at my shelf of purchased carts. From Atari 2600 to current gen titles, I just like playing with more than just games.

Share an unpopular opinion and then ask not to be criticized?

This thread is so edgy, not even going to bother writing a proper response

not criticizing the guy....in fact we need devs in the scene and i would encourage him to return......

In true and absolute honesty, I can say that piracy of 3DS/eShop titles is not all what I'm looking for. I'm interested in perhaps downgrading my N3DS for the sole reason of being able to install the CIA versions of RetroArch, which are supposed to be better than the 3DSX files. Of course I do realize that those roms aren't exactly legal either, but I do thinks it's far lesser form of piracy. I've always purchased 3DS games on cartridges and I will continue to do so.

For something to be dead it needs to cease to live. And there are still plenty of homebrew programs being developed. Yeah, you're gonna see a lot of threads regarding issues that are ultimately for piracy, but that's because there are far more people using all these programs than developing them, and since there are so many unique situations now to get things to the state where it can be used for piracy, there are consequently going to be a lot of threads regarding those issues. Homebrew programs continue to be made and as such, you can't say the 3DS homebrew scene is dead,.

Umm... Yes and yes. I finally have access to a decent GBA emulator, since it has kernel access, so I can retire my micro and PSP (switching between them depending on what I want) and dump all my cartridges to my SD card. Sure, backups may be technically illegal anymore, but I don't really care. I bought all my games new to make sure the devs got some money and I dump my own ROMs, so I feel morally fine about what I do.

Sure, there's a loud group of people that are just excited to pirate, but there's other reasons to have the system opened up like that. Don't let the crowd bring everyone else down. In the end, people that want to pirate will pirate, you aren't going to stop pirates, so just let them do their thing and don't put restrictions to try to prevent piracy if it hurts those that don't.

Not really the correct section for this discussion, but then again like the OP points out there are many pages over the past week of threads that should have been combined or posted on existing threads

This should be in EoF or in a blog.

Also , downgrade threads should be in the "Flashcards and Custom Firmwares"

Back on tracks : You are only adding fuel to the fire.
